We're thinking about getting our kids each a tablet for Christmas this year. Don't want to spend over $200, any suggestions? Looked at the Kindle Fire and Samsung Galaxy. Which if these two do you like better? Any others?

My son has an older Fire, and my daughter has a Fire HD. I got my son the Fire a couple of years ago because it was the best low price tablet available at the time. I got my daughter the HD last year so she could rent college textbooks from amazon, plus I already have a prime account. You can get a kindle app if you like to read though, so that's not really a big issue. They both pretty much only use their kindles for books and light web surfing and a few games. I'm looking at getting my youngest a Galaxy Tab 4 because I can get it pretty cheap from Sprint and have a data plan attached to it. I like the Galaxy tab because it has expandable memory. All of the Tablets in that price range are ok for basic stuff like websurfing, using it as an E-Reader, etc. I still think Ipads are the best of the bunch in terms of speed, but unless you're trying to replace a laptop, I think you're ok with either of the two you mentioned. One other quick thing, is Amazon's customer service. There was a problem with my son's about 10 months after he got it, and they replaced it, no questions asked. The one that arrived was also defective, and they sent another one and I had it in hand in less than 24 hours. A one year, no questions asked warranty is hard to beat.

Was reading some reviews for both. From what I've read, neither one has a significant advantage over the other.

In Randy-ese, that means get the cheaper one.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1‎ - 2014 edition. All of the operating systems are the same Android based deal, but mine has some additional peripherals (comes with a built in stylus that offers some additional functionality, and I can hook in a wireless mouse if I want, or as well as run a HDMI converter out of it, so it *can* essentially work like a Roku in some ways).

Still, I've borrowed a couple of my friends Samsung tablets, and they all work basically the same - and if you're familiar with a Samsung smart phone, then you are essentially familiar with the Samsung tablet. I would definitely recommend them.

I've got a little off brand (Eviant) I paid $120 for. Plays videos and games fine. I just can't root it. Not a biggie for what I use it for.

So what is the benefit of rooting, anyway? I know you're supposed to have "more control" of what goes on with your tablet, but I'm not sure I exactly understand completely.

Both of mine have iPad minis and use them daily. Excellent value for a slightly higher price.

That's the first thing I looked at but at $299 it's more then we want to spend on them.

If it's for christmas watch the sales for ipad mini's. They were $200 at target a few weeks back. And will likely be on sale when the new models come out in Oct/Nov. Also watch apple store for refurbs, if from apple they have new screen, new battery, and still have 1 yr warranty like new ones.

I looked at all of the tablets and liked apples the best. I'll admit I didn't really look at specs though..just went with what I knew how to use. I got a mini for $200 brand new. I've had one of the bigger ones and didn't like it.

Has anyone used one of the microsoft Surface tablets?

My wife needs something for work that can run Office and a laptop is cumbersome for what they are doing. The Surface fits the bill, with the attachable keyboard, but at first glance is pricey for a tablet.
