Not so fast my friend!

Still Top 5. Do you feel better? :lol2:

No surprise here really... As GT has already pointed out, he's a Nike kid, and he committed to an adidas school on his first visit. I was more than happy to have him, but we'll be alright without him as well.

Best of luck to the kid.

Can you explain - in a nutshell - how this works out? Why do they "have" to stick to a Nike school? Do their AAU teams get sponsored by Nike? What benefits do they have by sticking with a Nike school? A deal when they're out of college?

He plays for a Nike sponsored AAU team and has gone to all of the big Nike camps like the LeBron James Skills Academy and the Nike Global Challenge. Once they start investing time and resources at that level, the kid almost always ends at a Nike school...

So you take the top 15-20 players in the nation, or the "5 stars" if you will, they're all connected with brands, so the brand is hoping 1-2 make it big and sign with them in the pros? And the other 13-18 were there for a nice ride?

Who is doing the talking? Nike reps?

Each situation is different...

Everything about college recruiting creeps me out a little bit and that article didn't help in that respect... but I did appreciate a level-headed look at the factors that go into what makes the kid commit and de-commit in this situation.

Greg @GregNJ

When you take craploads of money from a lesser basketball brand don't cry like babies when it hurts your ability to sign elite players.

Ouch.

Yes much better!

Multiple people reporting U of L has cut ties with Blakeney. Not surprising. If I recall, U of L did the same thing with their last few decommits as well. (JaQuan Lyle, originally Quentin Snider, and a couple others.)
