If Dusty were manager, would the Reds be better?

Featured Replies

No. Hanigan would still be the starting catcher, and Meso would still be playing 50-60 games a year.

Just admit it. You used Dusty as a scapegoat because you didn't want to hold the players accountable.

No, I hated Dusty because he didn't give players like Meso a chance. Instead he loved veterans who sucked. Hanigan, Patterson, Taveras, the list goes on and on. I always said Dusty was a great clubhouse guy. That's all the good I could say about his managing.

So your issue is with Jocketty...

Did Jocketty force Dusty to play Hanigan over Meso? Patterson over Freel?

Agree with most that yes, if Dusty was still manager maybe a handful of more wins and much less Hoover. However, I think the biggest impact is the injuries to Votto and Phillips. Some will throw stats out and disagree with me but I just think their presence on the field and in the locker room changes guys' attitudes.

And in general Votto brings toughness by just getting the job done and Phillips is an energy guy.

I'll give you Meso. He could have played a little more. I will never believe it's as simple as, "well he would hit better so he should play". Not from that position. Meso is 10x better defensively this year than he was last year. Reference the many posts I made regarding him getting thumbed on fastballs.

Patterson of Freel? Really, is that even an argument? Whoever you want to throw out there the team is going to suck.

Injuires, 1 run games, hitting AGAIN, getting thrown out at bases especially home have killed them

With Votto, Phillips, Bruce, Frazier and Meso in line up they are averaging 5.2 runs per game, without 2.6 that tells the story. Dusty is not real good at handling pitchers and never has been, the Reds went with Price becasue they would have lost him to another team. I think they will be better because they are going to get some bats in, it may cost us Latos or Cueto, but the Cuban pitcher and Cingrani may shelter the load

Absolutely yes, for many of the reasons listed by other posters. Much less Hoover, less one run losses, less base-running gaffes, less totally jacked-up lineups to "mix things up."

Reds had injuries to key players last year too, and still made the playoffs.

With Baker seven to 10 more wins, which puts them squarely in the race.

Baker is a HOFer. Price has been bad.

Maybe Dusty was on to something......

Pre-All Star Game Meso....60 games .304 average 16 HRs 45 RBIs

Post-All Star Game Meso...35 games .237 average 4 HRs 20 RBIs

The Reds are only 7 games out in the Wild Card standings...0.5 games ahead of the Mets who they start a series with tonight. Could be a crucial set of games.

:bag:

The quotes in yesterdays paper by Price on the Reds second half were telling to me. He repeatedly said he didn't know what was wrong with the offense and had no idea how to fix it.

You could put Sparky with this team and it still wouldn't make the playoffs. Jocketty is to blame for this sumpsterfire and him only. He needs to figure it out for next year.

At this point in the season, Mesoraco has almost the exact same number of at bats that he had last year.

2013.....323 AB .....9 HR .....42 RBI ..... .238 AVG ..... .287 OBP

2014.....336 AB .....22 HR.... 70 RBI .... .286 AVG ..... .364 OBP

Mesoraco is a young player who finally figured it out this year. If he had performed like this last year, he would have earned more at bats.

Almost a full season in the books. Shortcomings over the past couple seasons seemed to all be blamed on Dusty. Yet this year the Reds are worse. How many more wins would the Reds have if Dusty were the manager? Would they still be in the race?

No

Dusty couldn't win with a good team here, what makes anyone think he could win with a bad team?

I will never forget this team losing to the Giants (3) in a row at home, after winning 2 in San Francisco, the double steal throw at third, and leaving in Latos to face Posey knowing he owns Latos. Dusty is good manager that just can not win in the playoffs, needed a change. Not saying Price is the right change, especially with a playoff team.
