Highlands scored 23 total points...in what way is that ever "up so much early"?

 

...and at what point do Highlands people start looking at last year and now this game and questioning the play of their team when they get an early lead?

I would think he was probably in there questioning his first half game plan, had he ground and pounded with the QB keeper like he did in the second half he might have had a chance at a Victory. I say no moral Victory, that team is good and should expect to win some of these games vs hanging their hat on coming close. If I'm coach I don't even mention moral victory to the players.

 

Of course the coach isn't going to mention moral victory. As a teenager you subliminally understand this is good for your team.

Yes, definitely a moral victory. But the caveat is it means nothing if you don't build on it and get better in the coming weeks.

I agree. One would think that should be the case but in NKY more 6A have been knocked off by lowers classes over the years.

Yea, and it's a very much flawed premise. Otherwise 1A teams would never beat 4A teams, and 2A teams would never beat 5A teams. Both happen frequently debunking the myth that enrollment of a school dictates the quality of it's football team.

I'll agree "moral victory" if we agree all the really means is "confidence builder". I know as a coach, I never say moral victory because I want to win every game we play! I don't care who is on the opposite side! If we play good and lose, I can build on it. But never would I use the word victory in a loss. I hate losing and I want to play the best to challenge my kids and eventually get to that level. If you never show the kids the "next level", they never know what it really takes to get there. Camp Co is doing that and making strides.

 

Now I know I'm going to get hammered for this and sound like a whiny HHS fan, but that game (as close as the score was), was also a few executions and 2-3 less penalties from being a blowout. If you consider the plays that the birds typically make and the number of uncharacteristic penalties for a HHS team, they looked normal to me. The hope is they clean it up. If they don't, that's what we'll see all year. If they do, they will become the same ole HHS team...very good. Remember, new coach and brand new OL (which many of the "drive crushing" penalties were on). My bet is they clean that up. Now you can say CC had penalties and shot themselves in the foot at times too. And that may be true. But both those things are very uncharacteristic for HHS and is one of the reasons they typically have an advantage over others. Take that advantage away and you get a game like this. The good thing...very easy fix for the Birds.

 

As for CC, don't want to take anything away from them. They definitely turned it around and believed they could play with HHS that night. They obviously changed some things and I really think holding the Birds to 0 in the second qtr gave them a second wind coming out at half. They really stepped up their game with the changes and new confidence and played very well. I LOVE what's going on with CC football.

Enrollment has been larger. The real question to ask is how many students were playing, which wasn't a high number at all for its enrollment prior to Lickert becoming the coach.

 

I know many do not like "moral victories", myself usually included. With consideration to how the Camels were over the years, how they have been known to play against Highlands, and the direction that Lickert has the Camels going, this was a moral victory IMO. I believe they will build upon this.
