Michael Sam released

Which two haven't in the past decade? Also, it's not a Heisman debate, Heisman can be a product of the system. It is constantly advertised on here and across America, that the SEC trumps all except the NFL. And now you all wanna down play the SEC defensive POY?

See post #39.

The point is this - there is only one thing that determines whether you play in the NFL - talent. Awards don't get you into the NFL - even an award from the best conference in college football. To perhaps help you get this, think about Tim Tebow. Award winner. SEC player. Nothing in the NFL.

Here is a list of the last 11 SEC POY's

2013 Michael Sam Missouri

2012 Jarvis Jones Georgia

2011 Morris Claiborne Louisiana State

2010 Patrick Peterson Louisiana State

2009 Rolando McClain Alabama

2008 Eric Berry Tennessee

2007 Glenn Dorsey Louisiana State

2006 Patrick Willis Mississippi

2005 Demeco Ryans Alabama

2004 David Pollack Georgia

2003 Chad Lavalais Louisiana State

I'll give you Patrick Petersen and Patrick Willis as NFL stars. David Pollack had injury issues. The jury is still out on Jarvis Jones. Demeco Ryans is also pretty good. The rest?? Meh. Being SEC player of the year doesn't guarantee NFL success.

Each and everyone of those players made an NFL team.. Except Sam. If you ask me it proves my point further.

Things like that happen sometimes. You can excel in college and not be cut out for the pros. Manti Teo comes to mind. I'm sure there are plenty more.

Isn't Manti a starting LB in the NFL?

To get to the absolute bottom line - you say Sams is not in the NFL because he announced he is gay.

Colin Cowherd just stated on the air that he believes there are about 30 NFL players that are gay. He said he knew of 3 when he covered the Bucs.

Each and every one of those guy were high picks and more complete players. Sam is a one trick pony. And while they all made teams, certainly, not all of them could play.

Again, I ask, what have you seen from Sam that convinces you he is an NFL player??

He is. He had a solid rookie season.

People can say it is because he is gay, but I have no doubt there are gay people in the NFL and it is simply not a big deal. Now if you want to make the argument a team may not be ready for the Michael Sam circus and that is why they passed on him, that I can believe... and I do fully blame teams for making that decision if they feel it will be a circus and he is looking to use the NFL platform (via an NFL team) to stand up for a social cause. Do not forget everyone on the Missouri team knew he was gay and no person cared. It was his decision - which I respect - to publicly announce his decision.

On the field, Sam was helped immensely by having another NFL caliber player on the other side of the DL which allowed him to pass rush, and pass rush only. The other All American DE was not even drafted but that seldom is brought up in these Michael Sam discussions. He is hurt because of his lack of versatility. He is a 4-3 pass rusher, so automatically you are down to 14 teams he could play for. That is it. If a team could bring him in for special teams they would bring him in for a roster spot.

A lot of players in the NFL are one trick ponies. Brandon Tate makes over million a year to field punts.

Fisher the Rams coach said himself Sam has the talent to play in the NFL, yet he doesn't have a job. Pass rushers are a premium in the NFL. Sam is the once in a blue moon SEC giants to not make a roster.

In my opinion, the teams don't wanna deal with the media circus and the locker room distractions.

As was mentioned, Sam is a 4-3 DE, that cannot play special teams. About 1/2 the league doesn't even play a 4-3 so, Sam's one trick limits the number of teams he can play on. Also, yes all the other POY's made a roster. They all however, were high draft picks in which teams made significant investments. High draft picks never get cut because of the investment made.

Sure the circus may have been an issue, but the Rams dealt with it pretty well. And NFL teams have proven they'll deal with a little sideshow if a player is talented enough.

I've seen nothing the proves this was anything more than a football decision.

There are a lot of guys that are "one trick ponies." Nothing new. But you best be really good at your trade if that is the only service you provide.

There are better players than Sam who got released. But the media just focuses on that and maybe thats what keeps teams from getting him.

The media focus was a little over the top initially, but really, aside from the stupid shower comment ESPN made, there wasn't a ton of focus on Sam, even when he got cut. Sure it was mentioned, but I just don't remember any outlet dwelling on him. Again, he got more coverage than the average 7th round pick, but I just don't see where anything was over the top.
