I'm glad it didn't get played. Raceland and Ashland have a healthy relationship and we love the friendly rivalry. We are excited to get to play in the ceremonial environment that will be on display this Friday night.

In that sense I am happy that Raceland will be the team to cristen the stadium. I've always said they are my second favorite team in the state. The atmosphere for that game will be amazing.

The only thing that bothers me is possibly playing a 9 game schedule. In recent years Ashland has been scheduling their open date for the last week of the season, presumably to get some rest and heal up injuries before the playoffs. I've only found two teams that play a 9 game schedule and share open dates with Ashland. That's Henry Clay and Somerset. Henry Clay is a large school, so does Ashland try to work something out with them but risk injuries and give up the resting week? I know nothing about Somerset, so I can't speak as to whether it would give them any playoff type experience, which would be ideal, if Ashland were to give up their resting week. As of right now it looks like we are only going to get 9 games in.

I believe Somerset played NewCath in the State Semifinals last year. I am thinking we were eating at the same restaurant in Richmond as they traveled North and as we were traveling South to Williamsburg.

Sounds like they are a viable opponent then. I'm curious whether they would be willing to make a trip to Ashland though. It would be a much longer trip than NCC had to make and longer than Ashland and Henry Clay would have to make to play each other.

The high school isn't even at the stadium. I was at the stadium a little before 7 and didn't see any team busses there. The game was called well before that.

The boys were sitting at the middle school. They in fact arrived at the middle school at 4:50. The parents buses were pulling into the stadium when they found out the game was cancelled. That's about 6:15 or so. So they were in fact at the stadium for a couple hrs before learning there would be no game. They were told it could take up to 4 hrs to get the field ready.

No expense. Ashland was going to cover all expenses for the trip. What games were played at Newport's stadium yesterday?

Excellent question.........:sssh: I know where all the youth teams were playing and where the varsity team was.............

Another poster said they were at the high school, even after I mentioned the high school isn't at the same location as the field. With so many contradictive statements its hard to tell what really went on.

The only thing I know for sure is that Ashland gave them several options to get the game played, all were declined. The options I know of were to play the game in Ashland on Saturday or Sunday and Ashland would cover travel expenses, or Ashland would travel to Newport either of those days. Both offers were shot down by NCC because "they had other obligations" this weekend. No one has been able to explain what those obligations were.

Can someone please now start a Cooper NCC thread??

Are you that someone?

Care to elaborate on that? I know where the varsity team played, but it was mentioned that the youth teams were occupying the stadium in Newport.

Youth teams.......all of them played at Mills Road yesterday. Games started at 9 am. Now the Middle school team was supposed to play at 430 but not sure of the location. It was postponed due to the heat. I will qualify all this with the fact that I have no clue if anything else was at Newport Stadium and of course NCC has no control over whether Newport would even allow them to use the field. But the youth program was not playing at Newport yesterday.

What all is that field used for? Is it a large multisport facility? Im not from the area, hence the questions that would be obvious to people in Newport. Another thing I don't get, is that I understand Newport owns the stadium, but if they have a working relationship with NCC to allow them to use it, why does it seem like it takes an act of God to make that happen? At least that's the way it has appeares when Ashland offered to drive to Newport.

It is a football stadium. Not sure what the inner workings are to get field for an NCC game on short notice. Unless someone knows otherwise I do not think Newport is very difficult to work with at all. They seem to always be very cooperative and accommodating.

If they allow other teams/jfl/etc. to use the field I would imagine they are pretty accommodating. Which is what brought up the question. People were saying NCC may not be allowed to use the field, didn't have keys to operate the field etc. It seems like if Newport shares the field with them, if NCC really wanted to use it Saturday night it shouldn't have been an issue. I'm not implying anything against either school, just trying to get more of an understanding of why the game couldn't be played, given the multiple options available.
