Newport Central Catholic/Ashland - Postponed

Featured Replies

It was a two year contract so you won't have to worry about it next year.

With the way this has been handled that's a given. Knowing Mark Swift I seriously doubt he would renew the series even if Newport agreed to play at Ashland two years in a row.

To try to figure out why this is still going on. Dont be a jerk

Not being a jerk. You asked why it was still be talked about. That's the reason. People keep clicking on the thread, and feel they need to post about it.

Listen, I'm sure the contract called for the game to be played on Friday August 22, with no stipulations for a makeup date if weather prevented the game from being played on that date. NCC had every right not to agree to play on Saturday. I just find that traveling on back to back dates was very comical and a weak excuse. Good luck to NCC the rest of the year.

It was mentioned that NKY teams hate to travel because they don't have to. And back to back days for a 2.5 hour trip? Oh the humanity!!!

I can pretty much guarantee if it had been Ashland's turn to make the trip to Newport, and they used a "back to back days trip excuse they would have been ridiculed to no end. And rightfully so.

And just how can you guarantee that? Has it ever happened?

The why travel? To play a football game. To get your kids a game experience. I'm willing to bet if you polled the NCC kids that they would have overwhelmingly voted to make the trip back to play Ashland.

Wrong. I talked to a number of them and they said after the trip and sitting around the high school for several hours to find out they weren't going to play there was no way they wanted to get back on a bus the next day.

The high school isn't even at the stadium. I was at the stadium a little before 7 and didn't see any team busses there. The game was called well before that.

Several hours? What time did they get there? Never heard of a football player not wanting to play a game:

No. Ashland has never used having to travel 2 hours or so on back to back days as a reason to not make up a game.

I will say this. If I were Ashland's AD I would have offered to put NCC up in a motel room for 2 nights to be able to get the game in. Perhaps he did, and was told that the Catholic boys didn't like to sleep in beds other than their own for consecutive nights. I just don't know. And I'm just kidding about the last part before anybody gets their panties in a wad. :)

I see, I figured they would have used adjacent Verity Middle. It is undergoing an expansion so that may have been an issue. I still don't get why they would have had to spent so much time there though since the game was called around 6pm. Unless the Athletic Directors were trying to work out a compromise, but it seems like that could have been done over the phone if getting back to Newport was going to be an issue.

Im with you on that, I figured it would be a viable option. With the large gate money and already offering to cover travel expenses it seems like that wouldn't have been an issue. But like you said that option may have been offered and declined. The statement from the school indicated that several options were offered but declined.

Without reading through everything, has the game been rescheduled or cancelled?
