Was just told that Ashland offered to pay Newport's expenses to come back today, and also offered to make the trip to Newport today. Newport declined both offers.

Just for conversation sake, do any of the Newport people know what obligations the football team has that may have kept the game from being rescheduled? Since it appears that Ashland had offered to cover expenses.

If Ashland would have came to Newport tonight you would be sitting in flooded stands without having started the game yet. Actually you would not have been sitting as the Reds had fans evacuate the stands and seek shelter on the concourse at GABP which is maybe 2 miles away.

I understand that you guys are dealing with relatively the same thing we dealt with here yesterday. My question is what obligations does NCC have today and tomorrow that would prevent the game from being played in Ashland, since Ashland had appeared to offer to cover the expenses of coming back.

Sunday would be a no-no without Diocese consent but you probably need to ask Lawnboy about Saturday.

I thought I read before that Diocese allows games after 1:30 in general? Not sure if there is a cutoff time for evening services or not, but I believe I read somewhere that they have allowed other sporting events to play on Sunday after 1:30pm.

 

I'm not upset, it is what it is. But it appears Ashland tried to make the game happen every way possible, but were basically told "no we have other obligations this weekend." Yet no one knows what those obligations are.

Yeah I have no idea about any of that, I'm not as familiar with the area as a lot of you guys are. I would expect that exceptions could/are made though. It's just surprising to me that it wasn't possible to play the game at all.

Just got the "low-down".

 

1. Ashland did offer to pay the NewCath teams expense to travel to Ashland on Saturday, however they were NOT guaranteed the field would be dry enough to play. With that, NewCath was not going to drive another 5 plus hours round trip for another possible cancellation.

 

2. Newport Stadium was unavailable on Saturday because of youth league games, so Ashland traveling here was not an option.

 

3. Playing on Sunday, at anytime, is not an option...per the Diocese of Covington and the NewCath Administration.

 

4. Can someone from the Ashland contingent confirm or deny, they were bringing in a "big benefactor" who donated a substantial amount of money for the renovations to Putnam Stadium, and this is why they were so adamant about seeing this game played. :idunno:
