What other Birds might be headed to the D1 level?

 

Cowboy Abner may have a shot at D1.He started at DB/LB as a junior on a very talented Bluebird team. I could be wrong but I think he got plenty of playing time as a Sophomore. I haven't seen him lately, if he has been hitting the weight room and has gained a few pounds he might get some D1 looks. He comes from a great family that has carried on the tradition at Highlands for many decades. Household name in Ft.Thomas, for sure. He's not the biggest kid on the team but will wollup you with his big hits. Stay healthy young man, the Birds need you.

Don't think 2010 had any and possibly 2012 also but I might be missing someone.

That team had a whole bunch of talent on it and I know of 1 D1 and a handful of others that played at various levels and that was just the Srs.

 

Remnac made a few good points including this yrs schedule to start with and the talent that is sleeping that is waiting to rise.

 

As biased and connected as I am, I am going to have a real hard time finding any of those great teams that would not have struggled or got tripped up along the way.

It will be a tough season to say the least but isnt every yr at Highlands tough? Every Fri nite is somebodies State Championship when they play Highlands...Just sayin

Never said they didn't have a bunch of talent, just couldn't think of any D1 players for those years.

You mean Highlands didn't have their customary 8 Spring Games so that informed Highlands fans could form an opinion on the level of talent?

Starting talent is comparable, depth will be the question.

You just don't know; can't know, until you see them in action against opposing teams. Well, at least I don't feel comfortable making the comparison you are looking for. But hey, what the heck, it's another somewhat meaningless Highlands thread for those that like to complain that BGP is all about Highlands to get worked up about.

If someone wants to complain about BGP being all about Highlands they either need to start more threads about their own school, suck it up, or hit the road.

 

Being serious here, I think it is a fair question, I asking for honest judges of talent about the 2014 Birds. New Coach, tough schedule, loss in the finals, etc. This is REALLY an exciting year to watch the Birds.

Please define D1 level. Does that mean offers, letters, e-mails, visits? Curious to hear what you have to say before I provide any answers.

I think its a fair question and what's wrong with evaluation and speculation (I know you all watch ESPN,lol) Anyone can answer the question after the season:idunno:

Regarding D1 talent.........size and potential, they will come calling on Jack Telek if he plays well early.........

Starting talent is comparable, depth will be the question.

From an outsider looking in. The senior class is solid, not spectacular but within the norm of HHS football classes. However, let's not forget they lost one of if not their biggest weapon in Feggins. Junior class, average by most HS standards, definitely below average for HHS. The Sophomore class is well below the norm at Highlands. I am not saying that there are not good or excellent players in the Soph and Junior classes, just not as many nor the quality that Highlands has seen the past 8 or 9 years.

 

Let's be clear, in my opinion HHS wins because they are the best TEAM, not the best individual athletes or D1 Prospects. However if there are a couple injuries to key players, I don't think Highlands has the ability to replace them as they have in years past. Stay injury free and they will be similar to teams of the past few years. Get the wrong player (Hodge, Abner) injured and it could be a different story against the Colonels.

From my point of view I would call it "unproven talent" at this point. Highlands always seem to have talent every year, but what the coaches do with that talent will be the key this year. Compared to other years at HHS there are very few returning starters and I don't think any seniors this year started when they were Sophomores, and very few started as Juniors. Highlands has (4) players that will be 3 yr starters...

 

Brady Murray at OLB

Andrew Abner at Safety

Griffin Urhlage 2 yr Safety / 1 yr RB

Jarrod Dougherty 3 yr starter at kicker and will be just a JR.

 

plus several 2 yr starters.

 

Its not many but this is what Highlands has always done and have done very well. They start a few Soph to make sure when they enter a yr like this they know they will have seasoned veterans.

 

This yr will be no different, they will start a few Sophs, not sure how many and wont go into detail at which positions.

 

Lastly, one would be hard to find the last time Highlands started an all Sr let alone many JR/SR teams. It takes a total team effort and all of the kids need to know that each and everyone must be counted on each and every yr. NEXT MAN UP:thumb: JMO.

Some very good points but I would not hinge a Highlands football team on just two guys. It certainly wouldn't help the situation but I think many are underestimating the talent level of this team.

 

I have said it many times on here, no one individual is bigger than the football program at Highlands, never has been and never will be, period.

 

My Birds will be just fine this yr despite the much appreciated but deep concerns from those outside the program...:thumb:

 

Heck, mediocre teams have won state championships at Highlands in the past...Just sayin
