August 4, 201412 yr Not under pressure. He's bad period whenever he is under pressure. Lets be honest, nearly all QB's are bad when under pressure. Seattle even made Manning look bad and the Giants over Brady a couple times when their front four got pressure. I just want him to be great when NOT under pressure.
August 4, 201412 yr Lets be honest, nearly all QB's are bad when under pressure. Seattle even made Manning look bad and the Giants over Brady a couple times when their front four got pressure. This is a great article that I recommend everyone to read A Bengal Under Pressure There is a difference in how QB's on avg perform under pressure and how Dalton performs under pressure.
August 4, 201412 yr I hope the contract is perfomance based but if not, you still need a good QB to win in the NFL and I can remember a whole bunch of Bengal QB's over the last 20 years that are not even close to Dalton. If you can go 30-18 in the regular season as a Bengal QB then you can't be too bad. His numbers are awful in the postseason but his OL sucked as bad as he did and their were several drops by the WR's so it wasn't all on him. I think he is going to have a big year if the new center and the new RB perform like I think they will. Jackson will run a lot more which will take the pass rush down a bit and give Dalton time which he has proven to be good when he has time.
August 4, 201412 yr The Bengals are hedging their bets here. If they didn't do it now, if Daulton has a great season, it costs them a lot more to sign him at the end of this year, especially if they have to franchise him. Also, they don't exactly have the QB of the future on the roster (sorry AJ). Yes the playoff performance has been bad, but he has lead them to one of the most successful 3 season runs in Bengals history. There's a decent chance he eventually outperforms this contract.
August 4, 201412 yr He led the 49ers to the Super Bowl and the NFC Championship game the last two seasons. I'll take that. So he got 100 million because their D and run game were elite. Try again...
August 4, 201412 yr 19 million a year, will be a blessing and a curse for him. Fans and media will remind him every pick and loss. He will be lucky to see half the total money. Very tough day for the NFL GMs who have to budget for superstar QB's. Non of this matters to the Bengals, they can easily throw away the money for a few years then reevaluate. Poor business decision though, they paid out of fear and wouldn't have had to pay but a few million more if he won the SB this year.
August 4, 201412 yr Makes you wonder what Cam Newton's contract will be looking like. Their first three years are such that you think Cam deserves way more than Andy? Interesting.
August 4, 201412 yr ........ Never a doubt this was getting done before the season. Never a doubt. I'll now be retiring from this thread for good because the lazy narrative is overpowering.
August 4, 201412 yr So he got 100 million because their D and run game were elite. Try again... He also got them to the NFC title game with essentially reserve WRs. I like Kaepernick a lot more than Dalton.
August 4, 201412 yr This is a great article that I recommend everyone to read A Bengal Under Pressure There is a difference in how QB's on avg perform under pressure and how Dalton performs under pressure. So basically this guy says Dalton sucks in just about every area? And yet, he has won 30 games in 3 years, OK.. I agree he has sucked it up in the playoffs ALONG with most of his teammates and coaches. I think the best is yet to come, but if not, at least he is better watching than all the clowns they have had since the early 90's. If I have to be satisfied with JUST getting to the playoffs, then I will be fine as in years past I had to switch my thinking to college hoops around late September.
August 4, 201412 yr To pay that kind of money for a QB that has done nothing in the playoffs is tough. However, look around the league and I agree that quality QB's are not just sitting on other teams benchs waiting to be signed. The Bengals organization knows that good Andy or bad Andy, is much better than anyone else they could find on the open market, and he is probably cheaper than most QB's that can win in January. If the Bengal's defense can do what they have done recently and the offensive line stay healthy, HOPEFULLY, they will just ask Daulton to manage the game and not ask him to go win it. I don't see him all of a sudden becoming the next Joe Montana (still burns about the two times he beat the Bengals in the Super Bowls) just because he got a boat load of money.
August 4, 201412 yr Mike Brown is too smart with his $ to not have this deal be highly incentive based. Well, I hope so, anyway.
August 4, 201412 yr I will wait until we see how the contract is set up to really judge it, because I know I also was wanting to make him have to play out this year to determine if we sign him back.
