Bet the Obama kids don't eat the kind of lunches, all the "little people" have to eat.

I know a lot of us baby boomers remember school lunches before the government got involved with the menu, were good and filling. The inner city school system I attended the food was great and lunchrooms were packed. And I dare say we were in better shape back then because we were allowed to "play", you know, things like 2 recesses a day and phys ed, even if the temperature was cold or hot, OUTSIDE! No air conditioning where I went to school. I know I'm getting a little off topic but I just remember the cafeteria food being very good. The ladies in the cafeterias took a lot of pride preparing good food for us kids.

 

Some of the best meatloaf I've ever had was from Beechwood's lunchroom in the late 60's to early 70's. Don't remember the lady's name who ran it back then but I remember her meatloaf.

My grandmother used to man the deep fryer at school. Those were the good days when french fries were deep fried instead of baked.

 

 

Way to go Fort Thomas. I'd say that if the school district can afford it, they should do it.

How many schools allow students to leave the campus for Lunch? Anyone know of any others?

One thing I admire about Ft Thomas is that they will put their money where their mouth is.

 

It helps when you have it. I don't begrudge Highlands for doing it. Many county and independent districts would probably like to do this but can't sacrifice the funding.

When kids head back to school at Highlands High School, they’re going to see more of their favorites on the school lunch menu, and bigger portions, too. That’s because the district has decided to opt out of the federal school lunch program.

 

They’ll forgo federal money for free and reduced price lunches, along with federal money for commodities, in order to avoid the menu restrictions that go along with the money.

I applaud Highlands. I have heard nothing but nightmares about the lunches the last couple years and how awful they are.

Lunches have really went way down.

 

I have a daughter who was in 5th grade last year and she would have to bring more food if she bought her lunch or go back up and get a 2nd lunch because the servings are so small.

 

I feel sorry for the lunch ladies as well. There is nothing they can do about it.

Exactly. They are being told what to do, can't place a lot of blame on them since they have to follow guidelines.

Did I hear correct that they only average 130 lunches a day? Wouldn't that equate to less than 20% of the student population?

I'm guessing the reason it is so low is because of what was served before.

 

The % of students buying it at the school I work went way down with the new guidelines. A lot more kids starting bringing their lunch from home.

I thought you could get them through Schwaan's. The guy whose route covered Gallatin Co. was a patient of my father's and he would routinely drop off boxes of irregulars rejected for retail sale of a wide variety of their pizzas. The rectangle ones would show up occasionally in his dropoffs.

I bet kids will stay on campus more because of this as well. Good for HHS, I remember the good old days on the Bluebird Cafe, I think that's what it was called. It was awesome, there was your 2 lunch lines then a separate window for on the to snacks and deserts like chips and cookies. As well as the infamous malt/shake and slushie machine. Michelle Obama would pass out if she saw what we ate back then.

So will the low income students still be able receive free and reduced price lunches, but the cost will be absorbed by the district instead of federal government?
