Boone County was state runner ups in 86', 87', 92', and 94'. They made it to the semi finals also in 83', 88', 89', 90', 93', and 97'. They might have thrown 20 passes in all of those games combined. I believe two of the state game losses were by 3 points. A couple of the semi final losses were in over time or by one score to the eventual champion. A real story of what could have been with Boone in the 80s and 90s.

 

Boone won't reach that level again. New school openings in the county have taken a toll on their program. I'd like to see them get back to where they were, but I don't see it happening.

First team I thought of was Somerset...but wasn't sure if they had won something back in the day or not. Saw Anderson on the original posters list. Though they have been good since Peach arrived and had quite a bit of success, especially the past 4 years, historically they have not been very good and can't be considered for this list. I had no idea Boone Co was that good back in the 80's-90's.

A couple State Runner-Ups... a whole heap of Regional Titles... consistently good for the better part of 30 years...and 2 or 3 teams who had the rotten luck of being the 2nd best team in the State only to have the best team play in their District or Region.

Okay, I did a little research project this morning to get a statistical breakdown of the best Kentucky programs to never win a title.

 

A rundown of my methodology:

-Each school was given one point for every playoff win.

 

-Each school was given two points for every district championship. District championships have traditionally been decided during the regular season. However, from 1959-72 some regions weren't divided into district, so therefore the regional champion was declared district champion for the purpose of this project. Also, from 1979-86 the state divided some districts into sub-districts. For the purpose of this project, sub-district champions count as district champions. And also, for a two-year period in 2006-07 district champions were determined in the playoffs.

 

-Each school was given three points for every state championship game loss.

I've always labeled Somerset as #1 in this category. They've had some very good teams that just never won the grand prize.

 

Glasgow is shown to be very much in the hunt by your methodology and is probably one most of us had forgotten about.

You can't build a program over night or in one season. But I'm excited to see the '14 Paintsville team. I think they will be great this year and can't wait to see Raceland/Paintsville this year. But like I said, love the research you put into this GCHS. It's a good list of schools and I'm glad Raceland is high on it. Raceland finally got over the hump this year in the Regional Championship game, but with the new alignment, Raceland should have at least four more Region Titles. And my prediction is, within the next five seasons, finally getting over the hump of the Semis and getting to the title game at least once. Excited to see the future. Thank you for the research!
