A couple State Runner-Ups... a whole heap of Regional Titles... consistently good for the better part of 30 years...and 2 or 3 teams who had the rotten luck of being the 2nd best team in the State only to have the best team play in their District or Region.

I just have a soft spot for the Tigers and felt somebody should mention them.

I've always labeled Somerset as #1 in this category. They've had some very good teams that just never won the grand prize.

 

Glasgow is shown to be very much in the hunt by your methodology and is probably one most of us had forgotten about.

 

Your list is very close to what most are saying from their own vantage points.

Tied for 28th with Lawrence County, Madisonville and Woodford County. Johnson Central has won 16 playoff games and have won their district 8 times.

By the way, if you want to know about any team not on the list, just ask. For instance Garrard County is tied for 42nd with Harrison County, Marion County, Pineville, Louisville Southern and Louisville Waggener. Garrard has 18 playoff wins, but only three district titles.

But it would be interesting to see the Jim Matney effect for Sheldon Clark and Johnson Central using your numbers. See what the combined points for those schools were prior to Matney becoming the Coach and the numbers when he was coaching and maybe the 3 years following his departure at Sheldon Clark. Then the rest of the "post-Matney" years at Sheldon Clark could be added to the years prior to his coaching tenure

 

See how much of those school's success can directly be attributed to his reigns as Head Coach.

 

Same thing could also be done for Tom Larkey at Rockcastle County and Harlan County.

Warren Central would have at least 1, probably 2, possibly 3 state titles in the past 3 years if it were not for Bowling Green. I know that John Hardin would have probably gotten 1 out of last 3.

So using my formula, Johnson Central had 4 points when he got there and have added 28 points since.

Sheldon Clark has won one (1) district title and nine (9) playoff games since he left, so you could argue they've managed to maintain his initial success in Inez. They just seem noticeably different right now because they haven't been very good the last couple of years. But don't forget, four years ago they won the district title and five years ago they lost a close state semifinal to Somerset.

Your formula is a good way to break the teams down, but with these numbers we have to acknowledge that the playoff format has changed and since Matney's departure from Sheldon Clark more teams make the playoffs and have a chance to win playoff games.

Very true. If I had more time (or more 538.com research), I'd give playoff appearances in different eras more or less value. I tried to weight district champs heavier, but as you said there are also more district champions now than in the past. Maybe that can be a future project!
