Bishop Brossart. One too many schools?

Featured Replies

So kids can go anywhere they want within the Diocese of Covington BUT schools are only supposed to promote their school within their feeder schools?

Pretty much...

To be fair to the thread, attached is a map of the Diocese of Covington area.

I have a question for everyone, do all students actually have to pay the tuition or are there ways around that?

There is tuition assistance available at NCC on a need basis. In fact, profits from the Labor day fireworks fest held on the Hill every year goes toward their tuition assistance fund.

Other than that, yes, families actually have to pay.

Is there no tuition assistance at Brossart?

I'm sure there is. I don't use it so I'm not aware of their policy. I know about NCC's because the fireworks fest is advertised as a tuition assistance event every year.

I think the student play also goes towards tuition assistance at NCC? Pretty good sized fund raisers for them.

Yes, there is tuition assistance at almost every Catholic grade and high school that I'm aware of.

The way the administrators always put it was, "finance issues should never be a hindrance to someone who wants to send their kids to a Catholic school". They definitely work with people, usually on a case by case basis.

Kids work after school and during the summer for tuition assistance as well. And by work I mean that they actually work.

What happened to the out of district tuition?

It would seem to me that if you wanted your kid to go to a certain high school, but they are not attending the "feeder" school, or don't belong to the feeder parish, they would consider switching parishes and/or sending their kids to the feeder school so that they don't have to pay that higher tuition.

Wouldn't that also help boost the feeder schools enrollment?

I'm not saying that kids can't choose. But wouldn't the tuition variance help with the alignment?

If the Diocese tried to enact a out of district tuition you would have families switching parishes right and left to become "in district" and the Diocese definitely does not want that to happen.

Bottom line is no Catholic high school in the Diocese (including Brossart) has ever turned down a student from anywhere. The whole idea of a private school is that families can choose whatever school they want their student to attend. The students don't "belong" to anyone other than Mom and Dad, and no student should ever be Business-Modeled fed to any private school.

Been there, done that!

Brossart has a large percentage of students on tuition-assistance.

The norm is that the families apply, their case is reviewed by a professional agency, and the school offers 65% of what the determined need is.

In addition to this there are after-school work and summer work programs available and a myriad of scholarships available that are based on need.

There was a move afoot during the Stewart administration that after 10 years named Scholarships, such as the Nathan Seiter Memorial or Mitch Orth Memorial Scholarships would be liquidated and the remaining funds put into the general tuition assistance fund with the objective being to increase the tuition assistance number upward substantially from 65%.

Even with 65% tuition assistance offered many families still cannot make ends meet and send their child to Campbell County.

Yes, there is a policy that states that any child who wishes to attend Brossart High School can attend Brossart High School. However, families are proud and like to be able to pay their own way.

In cases where families cannot satisfy their tuition debt the school either swallows it or they go to the child's home parrish for assistance.

Would it benefit Catholic Schools to accept students with disabilities? Has Brossart ever had a student with spinabifida that used a wheelchair? Or a student who was blind and needed braille? If a student has a learning disability, could they attend any Catholic Schools in the Diocese?

I know little about this issue so they are honest questions.

A child with disabilities could attend a Catholic school. But the public schools have a larger special education staff, and overall the public schools have more resources for students with special needs.

That's not to say that the Catholic schools don't have some systems in place to provide services for special needs kids.

From what I'm told, this years school play made over $80,000, yes $80,000, over the course of the two weeks it ran.
