Bishop Brossart. One too many schools?

Featured Replies

Ok, evidently Bishop Brossart is really reeling from some recent firings/resignations, and evidently is hurting with low enrollment as well. With all that, the question comes to mind; Is there one too many Catholic high schools in NKY?

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that there are too many, and personally I'm ALL about having more choice. But, there are quite a few private Catholic schools essentially in a very close proximity to each other in the NKY area. With that, there eventually comes a point to where an area just can't support X number of schools in a certain area. Has that number possibly been reached? Discuss.

I thought I read that the reductions were due to a very low entering class, but that "classes to come" were where they needed to be for sustainability.

Only 2 in Campbell County (Brossart and NCC). To answer your question, no.

What would lead them to believe that? What happened to this incoming class? I've heard it's around 50.

I wouldn't exactly say NCC is in close proximity of Brossart. My girl goes to NCC and lives on the south side of A-town. She is walking out the door to get to school around the same time girls in A-town are waking up to get ready for a BB school day.

Enrollment is always cyclical at any school. Rumors of Brossart's demise are unwarranted at this point, IMO.

Those are my thoughts as well. I know Covington Catholic typically draws a few kids each year from Cold Spring, but I doubt any other Campbell County Catholics attend another Catholic school in Kenton or Boone.

^I mean, I would imagine there's a few here and there that head to CovCath and Notre Dame each year, but yeah, if you live in Campbell County and want your kids at a Catholic HS you've got 2 basic options.

I think a big factor is the feeder schools. Brossart enrollment declining coincides with the drastic decline in enrollment at St. Mary's grade school, which is the #1 feeder school to Brossart. Lots of issues the past 3-5 years at St. Mary's, that caused a lot of people to go elsewhere, that have since been corrected with the addition of Matt Grosser as principal.

St. Mary is on the upswing as far as enrollment is concerned...

Yes, they are now. Lots of issues that had caused a pretty big decline before Grosser took over as principal from what I recall.

Why did you/she choose to drive by Brossart to go to NCC?

I'm not exactly sure why she chose NCC; maybe 8 years at St. Mary left a bad taste in her mouth for Brossart because she absolutely did not feel like it was a good fit for her. Period.

To each his or her own. My son goes to Brossart and loves it and my daughter loves NCC! Happy kids bring home good grades, get involved more, and have a better high school experience!

NCC is in Campbell County.

I truly feel that resources would be better spent combining the 2 schools. W/ the Bishop's current bend on eliminating academic program offerings for the sake of lowering operating costs, I don't see how it would not be beneficial.
