Bishop Brossart. One too many schools?

Featured Replies

We aren't speaking about racial integration here. Let's not go overboard w how dramatic combining the two schools would be. I look at some of the guys who graduated my year from Brossart and think about how much better our football, baseball and basketball teams would have been. The morals and customs of the two communities are near identical. The only issue is pride. Wins would soften that blow.

Perhaps. But should sports victories be the measuring stick of a school's success?

I think it does deeper than what you think. No, its not racial integration and I feel uncomfortable even typing that in this discussion. But you know as well as I do money would pour out on both sides to keep the doors open to both schools. Agreed the issue is pride, but it's a deep, almost irrational pride.

And did a bluebird just try to take a crack at kids coming from other areas of nky to a school.....come on old bird ; )

We are at capacity and can't accept our Boond county brethren - I figured you knew that :)

Likely not, but if you ask (off the record of course) the respective alum and parents of BBHS and NCC I promise you that it is major consideration. A centralized high school would be the best option for both schools, academically, athletically and financially, but you aren't going to dislodge the hard line support for these schools from either end of the county. Too many stubborn contributors on each side and I would venture some would rather let them dry up than combine. Great people, don't get me wrong, just living in the past.

You combine these two schools, their support and ability and you have a school that would rival the other powerhouse catholic schools in the state.

To say that the rivalry is "friendly" is in the eyes of the beholder. Some can manage and others absolutely cannot.

I would estimate the approximately 400 at NCC and 350 at Brossart now might shrink from 750 to maybe 675-700 four years from now due to the declining enrollment in Catholic grade schools in Campbell County.

If you were to combine NCC and Brossart four years from now (and a new school is not being built let's face it) one campus would have to suffice for the merger to make any economical sense.

I would estimate the new combined school using one campus would be lucky to have 500 students and realistically might be closer to 400 or less. That is just the way it would be. Tuition would not be any less expensive and there are too many other options so geographically close.

New building would HAVE to happen. This presents a huge problem bc NewCath just raised and spent a TON of capital on renovations and expansions.

It can't happen from a money standpoint. Both schools spent money on improvements recently.

They are not going to scrap all that and buy land and build another school that in all likelihood would educate fewer students than the two schools do now.

I'm the ultimate outsider looking in - not from Campbell County, not Catholic, etc. I would guess, however, that much of what you say is on point.

Just to clarify the distance situation in regards to NKY:

It is 11 miles between NCC and Brossart.

These schools as best I can determine are less than 11 miles from NCC: Dayton, Bellevue, Newport, Highlands, Silver Grove, CovCath, Notre Dame, Ludlow, Holy Cross, Holmes, Beechwood, Scott, Cov Latin, Villa Academy

It is.

if you want to close some smaller schools lets go after all of those single A schools that are smaller than Brossart. Private schools are self funded and tax payers could save some dollars by closing those schools and sending those kids to the mega county schools already open.

I love the talk of how great the sports program would be if you combined the 2 catholic campbell co schools. geez, how many district, region and state championships did the 2 combine for this year? The way I look at it is that you now have twice as many kids getting the experience of playing a high school sport, being the lead in the class play and sitting on student government. I have a vested interest in both schools, having graduated from one, and my kids going to the other. Very happy to see both schools continue to have great success both on the field and in the classroom. There is room for both of them, both will continue the Catholic education and Brossart will get the enrollment back to close to 400 with the resurgence of St. Mary and the new 1,000 home sub division going in a few miles away from the school.

Ok, evidently Bishop Brossart is really reeling from some recent firings/resignations, and evidently is hurting with low enrollment as well. With all that, the question comes to mind; Is there one too many Catholic high schools in NKY?

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that there are too many, and personally I'm ALL about having more choice. But, there are quite a few private Catholic schools essentially in a very close proximity to each other in the NKY area. With that, there eventually comes a point to where an area just can't support X number of schools in a certain area. Has that number possibly been reached? Discuss.

What do you mean resignations? According to the archdiocese website, there are no openings at Brossart.
