Bishop Brossart. One too many schools?

Featured Replies

CovCath is not allowed to promote themselves to any Campbell County Catholic grade school.

However, parents put up yard signs, and a near full-page ad ran in the Campbell County Recorder for CovCath's Open House. We cannot stop people from doing things on their private property and accept this, whereas a school paid for full-fledged sign would be contested. We object every year to NCC's putting up school paid-for signs at Pfferman's (sp) Flooring in Cold Spring advertising their Open House. By the time the diocese gets around to doing anything the event is past. We would hope that there would be honor among ourselves that such breaches of trust would not occur, but they continue to happen. NCC advertises their basketball camps, etc., in our parish feeder bulletins and advertise in the programs of our feeder's school tournament programs. Some accept them, others don't. Again it's lose-lose for Brossart. These are direct efforts to lure Brossart district kids to NCC, and in the case of CovCath efforts to lure NCC-Brossart kids to CovCath. We can retaliate and advertise all we want about Brossart in the NCC feeders - everything they do in life is Fort Thomas/Southgate north. They are not coming to Alexandria.

In the case of the CovCath ad in the Campbell County Recorder, the explanation was that this was a cost-saving measure. That it was cheaper to run the ad in all Recorder newspapers than just the Kenton County Recorders - what a sweet deal for CovCath.

The Brossart feeder kids are under siege. NCC wants what is theirs and what is ours. CovCath, whose numbers and offerings are not that much superior to ours, comes off as being vastly superior to the Campbell County Catholics. My hat's off to them, their marketing department is doing a great job. The mentality of our past administration is that we don't want to ruffle any feathers. I suspect that with Dan Ridder in charge the gloves will come off and we will do a better job of defending our turf, and promoting ourselves within our own district feeders. At least lets hope so.

NCC's designated feeder parish schools have the smallest number of students in the Diocese when compared to the feeder parish schools of the other high schools including Brossart . Maybe if that inequality was corrected then they would not have to "want what is theirs and what is ours".

I hate how people try to say kids from this feeder school have to go to this HS. Parents paying 6K a year can send their kids wherever they want.

And they do.

Districting is a good business model, so long as the majority of kids from those parishes stay in-district. There are plenty of family ties to out-of-district schools, without undue outside influence being placed on them however.

Always an amusing topic when schools claim kids as theirs. I always thought they were the parents - silly me.

I am pretty sure that the St. Joes kids that "belong to Mustang and Brossart" decide where they go based upon something other than the slick marketing campaign that goes on in the lawn at Pferman floors. However just curious does Pferman also have a store out in Walton where there is an NCC marketing campaign going on?

:)

This thread is missing the "insight and wisdom" of dennis12b. If we just had him we would have a full representation of the hypocrisy of the 2 Campbell County Catholic high schools. :)

Hypocrisy, indeed. Poor little Brossart. It's NCC's fault; it's CovCath's fault. Funny how you don't see Campbell County reps on here complaining about all of "their" kids being wooed to Brossart and BBHS is happy to take those kids, aren't they?!

IMO, if Brossart feels like they are having a problem losing kids to other schools, they need to take a look within and figure out what it is about their school that is not desirable to those kids.

Couldn't agree more.

Instead of complaining that kids are picking other schools (and I can assure you it has very little to do with the signs or newspaper ads, etc.) step up your game and don't cry about it. Brossart losing kids to these other schools is no one's fault but their own. Let's also not act like Brossart is "above" the marketing efforts that these other schools use.

I would say kids for the most part follow their friends if they have not already been destined to one school or the other. You can't say that an entire NCC family at St. Joe's isn't going to send their kids to NCC. I don't feel that is something against Brossart, its just what their family does. I would think the same goes the other way. A family at St. Therese with a long history at Brossart won't generally change their thinking and just send their kids to NCC.

The issue I'm gathering from this is the "marketing" and if one catholic school is permitted to promote their school in another catholic school's feeder. That is really what I think this coming down to. You can't do anything about what I said first, but you can do something about what is being said in those schools.

Don't think our kids don't see the tug back and forth for kids that go to Brossart or NCC. Its all silly in my mind.

I agree with all of the above posts. I will be the first to admit that our (Brossart) promotional efforts have fallen way short in keeping pace with putting our name out there and having a viable presence in our grade schools. Hopefully, that will change in the near future. I've also cited family ties being a major, understandable factor, and perceptions of one's special interest areas, be it athletics, academics, or social environment being major selling points as well.

My point is that the Brossart district feeders seem to be under siege from a lot of outside influences.

Not sure where I'm being hypocritical. Every word of my statements is true and an effort to spell out some of the things that I perceive us to be up against. Yes, I do think that signs, advertisments, promotions, and physical presence are outright attempts to lure kids from our district to their out-of-district high schools and are not in keeping with the spirit of districting guidelines.

IMO, Just because popular belief is that kids and parents should be permitted to choose where their children go to high school does not give other schools license to attempt to openly sway those decisions.

I would be willing to bet that over 85% of NewCath students are not then first in their family to attend there. Its a school of family ties. Their dad mom uncles aunts brothers sistere cousins neighbors friends and so on wore the blue and gold proudly and the kids grew up dreaming of the day they got to attend school on the hill and play for the Breds. No matter where they live or what grade school they went to they want to be a thoroughbred!! Its tradition a family thing a dream from a young age.

What happened to the out of district tuition?

It would seem to me that if you wanted your kid to go to a certain high school, but they are not attending the "feeder" school, or don't belong to the feeder parish, they would consider switching parishes and/or sending their kids to the feeder school so that they don't have to pay that higher tuition.

Wouldn't that also help boost the feeder schools enrollment?

I'm not saying that kids can't choose. But wouldn't the tuition variance help with the alignment?

All students at any catholic school pay "in district" as long as they are a member of the Diocese of Covington. "Out of district" is charged if you live within, say the diocese of Cincinnati.

I know. But they used to have an in district/out of district tuition break. You used to have to pay more for a school if you did not attend the feeder school/parish. Got rid of it about 4 years ago?

I know. It was changed to reflect what diocese you are a member of rather than what parish you are from. Obviously, I like how it is now...

So kids can go anywhere they want within the Diocese of Covington BUT schools are only supposed to promote their school within their feeder schools?
