Brossart goes Independent for 2014

Featured Replies

No school would ever want to make this move, this is a move you do when you feel like you have no real alternative and are tying not to hurt/embarass your school and kids.

Although I understand the reasoning, the timing of this decision is a terrible. Are they going to play a full schedule? If so, this tells me that they have known for a long time that they were going to do this and left the teams in their district in the dark. Those guys will have a very tough time playing 10 games now.

Also, I read that they just cut the AD position. How are they going to come up with the money to pay all of the contract buy outs?

This program is on life support. Getting pounded in that district does absolutely no good. They finished last year with only 18 healthy bodies and graduated 9 seniors from that bunch. It's a good move, but should have happened 5-6 months ago.

This.

I dont have any issue with them dropping out district play. But my question, is there 2A district that tough? Are they just going to play 6 game schedule?

Sounds like Brossart made some changes today. Replacing the principal and admissions guy.

Tom Seiter also retired.

I'd heard a rumor that principal Dick Stewart was gone. Guess it's official today. They are cutting left and right in A-town it would seem. It's going to be an awful empty new addition they just built!

From Mustang's website:

Mustangs Football To Go Independent For 2014 Season,

Will Be Realigned To Class 1a In 2015

Players Needed To Bolster Our Ranks

In preparation for the move to 1A in the fall of 2015, the decision has been made to drop the 2A District Teams from this year’s 2014 Mustang Football Schedule. We will no longer be playing NCC, Holy Cross, Lloyd and Newport High School and are working to fill those open slots. The remainder of the schedule will consist of other 1A teams and Pendleton County.

For 2015, Bishop Brossart will be moving to Class 1A, District 5 and joining Berea, Bracken County, Nicholas County and Paris.

Players Needed - The team is still very much in need of players interested in helping build a foundation of success for the Mustang Football Program as we enter a new district.

If interested in playing, coaches will be available Friday night at the Firehouse starting at 5:30 to answer any questions.

What is going on at Brossart? First the AD suddenly retires, now this :

Called Brossart principal Dick Stewart for reaction to FB program going independent this year and found out he is out as principal.

Brossart started football to save the school

I don't think that was the case. A dad wanted football so his son could play and started the program. IMO they jumped into it too quick and should have built it from the feeder up. Did hear rumors some upperclassman may be playing after taking a year or two off?

These are certainly tumultuous times at Brossart High School.

Our football program is indeed in trouble. The move to become independent has been made as a desperate effort to get additional players to come out for the team. We are presently in a Catch 22 in this area - because of low numbers potential players choose not to play football because they know they will have to play two ways for 48 minutes and will be jepordizing their heath and wellbeing which would put their other sports futures at risk.

I do hope we survive this season and then build for the future in 1A.

As to contractual agreements, penalties, etc.., I'm not in a position to say. I was copied on a letter issued by then principal Dick Stewart, which I copied and pasted and is quoted in a previous post. Dan Ridder has been named the Brossart Principal. Dan is a former head football coach who realizes the value of having competitive athletic programs and I'm sure he will do everything in his power to promote our football program to our student/athletes.

Our small freshmen class comes as no surprise and is reflective of the diminished number of students in the upper grades of our feeder schools. The numbers in the lower grades are substantial and our enrollment is projected to rebound over the next few years.

AD did not retire, he was let go due to budget constraints. As Mustang mentioned a small incoming class required them to reduce head count in the faculty. Did not shock me that former principal Stewart cut non teaching positions first. Also made a change with a new development director.

Dan Ridder will be a HUGE difference maker for Brossart. He has made great improvements throughout his entire career.

How much will have to be paid for dropping the district teams? I haven't heard of this happening this close before but I may be wrong.

I wouldn't fret about Brossart's overall future just yet. Yes, a small class is coming in but St. Mary is currently having a growth spurt as is the city of Alexandria with the new Arcadia development being built.

They sent a letter out asking what program would increase attendance and football was selected.

I think $1000.00 is standard for breaking contract. Anyone know for sure?
