Montgomery Inn...overrated?

Featured Replies

If you like the ribs where the meat falls off, they are very good.

Sauce is a little sweet for me, and they are over pirced.

I go about 1.5 times per year.

When you go the 1/2 time does that mean you go straight to the bar and never leave?

During my college years I had some fraternity brothers from Cincinnati and NKY who would always talk up the Montgomery Inn and how Bob Hope would land his plane just to pick up some ribs, etc. About 10 years ago, I took a job in which I report to our branch office in Cincinnati. I usually have to go up and stay overnight for meetings about 6 to 8 times a year.

When I first started I made it a point to visit the Montgomery Inn and a few years later we had a Christmas party at The Boathouse. The ribs are good, however, for me they didn't live up to the hype. I feel like I have had as good or better at several places, and certainly at less cost. After my initial visit it's not a place that I would make it a point to go to anymore.

I found the ribs to be above average. Nothing to write home to Mom about, though. I have been to very few restaurants that have lived up to the hype.

In my opinion Lambert's Cafe in Sikeston, MO does live up to the hype. Fried pork chops, fried potatoes, sweet tea served in a jug the size of a pitcher. Probably a good thing for my arteries that I've only been twice.

About twice a year for me. Not many good ribs options close. Gotta get to Smoq

We love it. Granted, the cost keeps us from going with any regularity...but, it's definitely a spot we look forward to going to.

I love the Montgomery Inn !

Tough to think Montgomery Inn is top notch if you've lived in Memphis before.

Well, if any of you want to ship some of those overrated ribs my way...I'll gladly eat them. :D

If you like boiled ribs with no flavor (only tasting the sauce) then this may be the place for you. Personally I will go to City BBQ any day of the week over this because I like my ribs smoked. Next time you visit, notice the fact that they do not have a smokehouse.

Their sauce is too sweet for my taste but they have excellent pork chops.

Throw in a side of onion straws.

......

I eat at the original one for lunch all of the time. They have great salads and the lunch prices aren't horrible. I'm not a fan of their ribs (I don't like boiled, fall off the bone ribs), and like many, I don't like the sweet sauce, but they have several other items on the dinner menu that are outstanding. The Boathouse is a neat place, great views, and the wife loves it -- so we go occasionally.

Personally, I like the original one much better, but that is probably just me.

When it comes to local ribs, imho, they are far and away the best.

Stick with what we have in Louisville, better and cheaper than Montgomery Inn.

For my taste, I'll take the full rack at Walt's Hitching Post any day. Heck, I'd prefer the ribs at Famous Dave's and City BBQ to Montgomery Inn as well. That said, I still like the place and think they have a lot of great options at both lunch and dinner.
