I would assume that is a trespass. Can't see how you'd be responsible.

Agreed. If some kids break into my house and have a party while I'm gone I'm not responsible, correct?

Something that I probably lost in the shuffle that even if you aren't found legally liable, you could still be out quite a bit in defending yourself.
