Conner, Simon Kenton, and Cooper all submitted a form letter requesting they remove the playoff rotation in 6A. Anderson County submitted a similar proposal that playoff rotation be added in 5A. The reasons for these are incredibly obvious. Just found it a bit amusing to see both sides of the coin being asked for. Highlands for their part responded with a big kudos on a job well done - they'll play anyone.

 

Locally I found Franklin-Simpson's response interesting in that they basically called out the process of how South Warren ended up in 4A. That basically they'll have 5A numbers for the entirety of the alignment. I agree. The four year enrollment design the KHSAA went to (for reasons which I still don't fully comprehend) is the only reason South Warren is in 4A. It allowed them to count lower numbers from the initial school years that in no way reflect the enrollment that school will have for years to come. They'll likely never be as small again as they were in those years. Basically this has created a situation wherein 6 of the first 8 years South Warren plays football they will enjoy a significant enrollment advantage over every team in their class.

Highlands and Cov Catholic move to 5A has caused some upset 5A south teams. Interesting to see if anything changes.

I agree 100% about S.Warren. They should definately be reassigned to 5A because of the enrollment advantage. I also understand the reason for the rotating districts in 6a. T and X hold that same enrollment advantage, but, there's no larger class to put them in, so, the fairest way to handle that is to do exactly what they're doing. No other class has as large an enrollment difference from top to bottom than 6a.

 

It is amusing that Conner and Cooper opt to move up so they could get away from Highlands, now they're petitioning to get away from Trinity. Give me a break.

Madison Southern is upset they will have to play Highlands or Cov Cath in playoffs. They claim rivalries but they only have one rival Rockcastle. Maybe mad cent. If they want rivalries, play in regular season.

Ohio Co is as close to the D2 6a schools as they are to the D1 6a schools. I don't see any reason for D2 6a to only have 3 schools while D1 has 5. I think they should change that..

 

I think Berea has a good point and would be better in the district they're requesting. I don't see any reason 1a should have any 3 team districts.

It is situations like this as to why eventually the KHSAA will get into trouble with the variances in the classes. Everyone has heard the reasons for the 6A rotation or the smaller 1A and 6A classes or the super district but at the end of the day the reasons are arbitrary. And a government function that creates arbitrary policies and rules usually ends up with a mess (and eventually in court).

I'm working on a 4 Class thing. But, keeping 1A and 4A like the current 1A and 6A; w/ 32 teams (or 40), and essentially combining the current 2A/3A to be 2A & the current 4A/5A to be 3A.

So as far as division assignments are concerned:

 

-Bath County and West Carter both petitioned to play up because of the amount of travel required by their proposed district in 2A – they would have been driving everywhere. Requests were both approved. (New Cath had also responded with a complaint to the KHSAA about having to drive to Bath and West Carter.)

 

-Shawnee requested to be moved back down to 1A and was denied.

 

-Shelby County requested to be moved back down to 4A and was approved.

Grant County requested a move to 6a, if declined they said they were going to play as an independent. So, looking at the final draft Grant County was denied the move to 6a.

 

So now that district will be left with three teams Dixie, Highlands, and CovCath starting in 2015.

Does the state have to let them drop out? They weren't going to be able to compete with either NKY 6A district either, so why even petition to play up?
