With all due respect to Beechwood, but while they may still have the historic edge, they have not been better than Mayfield in quite some time. Mayfield eliminated them from the playoffs from 2009-2012 and only didn't last year because Frankfort did it first. Beechwood may well have gotten back on top of them eventually, but for the easy majority of the time that there have been 6 classes, 1A has belonged to Mayfield. By any metric.

3A will be fun!

"Some", yes. "Many", no. I don't see much upside to teams like Harrison County, Grant County, Dayton, Bellevue, Ludlow, Lloyd, or Brossart matching up against Highlands or Cov Cath with any kind of regularity. You need to play the best to beat the best, and beat the best to be the best....but there are some teams that need to learn how to play the decent to beat the decent, and beat the decent to be the decent. Getting stomped isn't much benefit to a lot of the teams around NKY.

 

Highlands usually plays a very challenging and sometimes better team or two each year, going by their KHSAA schedules 2006-2013: Cincinnati St. X, Elder, Colerain; Columbus, OH St. Francis de Sales; Louisville St. X; Scott County; Ryle. Going by some of the scores, like 35+ pt losses to de Sales, Lou St. X, and (?) Colerain, and rugged battles with the likes of Elder, I'd say Dale Mueller wanted to be playing up to learn strengths & weaknesses. Highlands has also been playing a pre-season exhibition game with Trinity since 2010 and it's at game speed. If ones objects, "Well, Highlands can do that, they are strong enough," I would answer, "But how did Highlands become Highlands?"

 

I also think of 3A Louisville Central. Mention of that school makes us think "contender," but until Ty Scroggins came along in 2007, they could not get over the hump. One of the first thing Scroggins did was resume Central's historic series with Lou St. X, in which X has won every game (some very close), plus drop weaker foes & toughen up the schedule with other quality 6A and 5A opponents.

 

Citing only 2 examples of playing up doesn't make for a slam-dunk claim but these are an example of a perennial challenger that stayed tough by playing tough & another that played tougher to become a perennial challenger.

 

I'd like to hear some examples of teams that need to play "decent" to become "decent." I think that would be instructive and interesting. I wonder if coaching is a factor too.

Boyle County is the best in 3A. Especially now that they have their old coach back. Belfry and Central have had good runs when 3A has been absent a powerhouse program, but that ends in 2015. Go Rebels!

Beechwood will be the cream of the crop now but they weren't when Mayfield was in.

 

Mayfield is one of the top schools and you left them out of 2A.

Agreed with most of the points you made. Made my list a little too quickly and didn't double check enough teams.

Well that was my point. There are a good number of schools in NKY who would certainly NOT benefit from playing Highlands and Cov Cath. Some would, like those you listed, but there are still some that certainly would not.

 

I would think all six of the 6A schools in northern Kentucky would benefit from playing Highlands and Covington Catholic.

I think Highlands is the cream of the crop in NKY and will continue to have trouble scheduling NKY teams to play who are not in their district. CCH, not so much, still don't understand when their fans continue to put them in the same boat as Highlands. It's been my biggest complaint for the last several years yet year in and year out after not winning anything they are still put on a pedestal. Beat Highlands and don't lose to teams such as Conner or being put to the test against teams like Ryle before putting yourself in the elite category.

Hey, I have nothing against CCH. I just think to continually talk about them as if they are some kind of elite school when it comes to Football then shouldn't they win something? When was the last time they won their district? When was the last time they went to the regional finals? Seriously, don't get on this "You just hate CCH so you bash them" crap because you couldn't be further from the truth. It is what it is and CCH is good at Footbnall but they aren't elite or the best in NKY so quit acting like they are. Beechwood. 18-8 (most of these wins vs 2A competition or lower)

Boone Co 6-16

Campbell Co 15-12

Conner 19-8

Cooper 16-11

Cov Cath 18-6 (5 of those losses to Highlands)

Dixie 11-17

Highlands 13-0

NCC 23-9 (most of those wins vs 2A competition or lower)

Ryle 8-15

Simon Kenton 16-8

- NCC played most with 32 teams

I said CCH is a good team but they are not even close to the same caliber as Highlands, yet you and other CCH parents or alum always seem to think of themselves in the same category when I. Reality they aren't close. So with you going all the way back to 2006, does that mean Cooper should be ranked higher than CCH because they have 2 district titles, 1 regional title and a state runner up all within the last 3 years? No, of course not, yet at least they won something this decade. CCH hasn't yet is always put on a pedestal for doing nothing. Like I said, win your district this decade and then we can talk.
