Ummm, no they don't. Ask kids around here who won the Touchstone Energy All A Classic basketball tournament...which is what it is called, and you will get a "Huh? What's that"? In the great scheme of things, it has no relevance whatsoever one way of the other to almost anyone outside of those that participate. Well, except, maybe, for you it appears.

 

Now, what someone has on a ring I don't know...the school or some private entity had those made up and they can have them say anything they want to I guess. Still not a "state champion" no matter what it might say on it.

As someone who doesn't have a child that plays high school sports and I, who only played football, I will say I always thought A tournaments in basketball and softball were state champions. I have a friend whose kid showed me a ring and told me they were state champions.

I live in Anderson Co, and the tournament is played just down the road in Frankfort. It's nothing to most of these kids out here who don't participate, and like I said many don't even know what it is. To most every kid, the state championship means one thing...the last team in the state to walk out of Rupp a winner, and that's it.

Alright, since I seem to be talking to myself now...let me throw this one out at ya to get ya going again.

 

The kids that go to NCC, St Henry and HC have a choice whether to attend that school, right? They don't have to go there. They chose to go there. I'm guessing if the kid was an athlete prior to attending, the education and the sports program could have been a factor on why they went there, correct? So they knew they were going to a 1A school that would have to compete with larger schools before they walked in the door, right? And they still chose to go there, right? So if they knew that going in and still chose to go there, why do they need the All A? I may be a little more tolerent of a very smalll public school, but I'm not sure I'm buying the "we're just a small school" arguement from the others.

Since there is no All-A competition in Track and in Cross Country and Football ....seems to me the easiest way to abolish the All-A is to classify every sport. Problem solved.

Yes, that would be a great tournament for those teams. There are probably 4 teams that could win that, with a couple others having a long shot. And none of those teams can compete with the upper half of the region. Enter NCC and St Henry (who can compete with the upper half of the region) and ALL of those teams have no prayer of winning the A region. I know that's not St Henry and NCC's fault. Again, my pioint is the A is useless. If St Henry and NCC dominate the A and have just as good a chance as 90% of the other teams in the regular region of winning the regular region, why do we need the A? To create a second opportunity for teams that already get a chance to compete for a region anyway? Again, where is everyone else's second chance?

My only response to reading ALL of RCC's posts is this: take a view out of the 9th Region, where you obviously are focused, and see if the spirit of this thing changes. We get it, NCC and St Henry are good teams, competitive at this point with some of the bigger schools. Some of that has to do with options and ability to bring kids into their system because of being a parochial school. (Yes, another thread, but true…) The public schools may not be as competitive because of districting issues….

 

Maybe, just maybe, the answer is to only allow public schools, call it the Touchstone Energy All A Public School Classic and see what happens….

Ooooohhh. Another great point. Would NCC, St Henry and Brossart still defend the all A the way they do if they said it was only for public schools?? It's and invitational, right?

No one is denying what I'm saying isn't true. So I'm not sure how my credibility is lessening. They all just say "it's a great tournament for the kids, so leave it alone". Not saying it's not a great tournament and great experience...for the kids that are allowed to play in it and are allowed to have experiences that others can't. Well sure it's great for them! I agree!

 

I'm done with it. The all A is fine. I have no issues with the teams that play in it or the tournament itself. It's the hypocracy around it that kills me.

 

Just answer me this Madman. Why do only a certain few deserve a chance to experience all these things that everyone says is so great? For every team that wins the A region, I can name 10 others that are in the exact same boat as them (regardless of size). So again, why don't we care if they have an extra chance to experience this?

Nope!

 

Let me ask you this. I pull together all the mid-size schools to participate in my tournament. I set it up the exact way the A is setup today. We have district and regional winners and crown a state champion at the end. Pretend there is no All A in existence. We don't allow any 6A or 1A schools in the tournament. We only "invited" (ha ha, call it what you want) 3,4,and 5A schools. Now we have a mid-size school state champ and an overall state champ. You okay with that?

 

That's okay with me. Actually, I think that would be great. However, that's not the case. Highlands has the opportunity to get in any prestigious tournament (other than the All A) that they want to and if they chose not to, that's their fault. Please, organize a mid-class state tournament so we don't have to listen about how unfair it is that Highlands doesn't have this opportunity.
