Good lord, it's a tournament for smaller schools, that's all it is. Let them play and have some fun, if they win then they had to beat several teams in a row to do it, that in itself is a feat. Not sure why the animosity here.:idunno:

Do you hate that Track and Cross Country have 3 classes and that in each class there is a State Champion? If you say "No", then would you be in favor of all KHSAA sports having at least 3 classes and 3 State Champions?

So I assume you are a proponent to changing to classes? My point is, either do or don't. Yes, winning is fun and creates memories, but we are segmenting a small group that has an opportunity to create those memories and many others don't. There are plenty of other schools that don't get a chance to create those memories. Why do we segment out the small schools only? If we really believe that we need to create more memories, then classification it is! And i'm fine with that. What I'm not fine with is doing it for some and not others just to keep small schools from complaining.

 

I don't think we need classes in softball. I also believe that any team that plays in a tournament, by definition "competes", they may not be "competitive", but they compete. Equal footing is not a uniqueness to All A schools in this tournament, it's just a tournament that they can play in, to compete, and possibly have a chance.

 

The All A concept is about percentages, nothing more, nothing less. The more students enrolled at a school, the more potential in the overall talent pool. It's just a mathematical issue. It just so happens that a couple of the All A schools have longevity in their programs that is positive…it happens.

 

If anyone at the 4A level wants to put together a tournament and call it the All 4A Tournament, then I say have at it. It's not an institutional thing, it's because some people at the A level took it on to have a tournament for their level, put it together, got it organized and did a lot of work to provide a quality tournament.

 

Having said that, there are a number of quality tournaments that teams can measure themselves by. I saw several teams this weekend at the Capital City Classic that had similar enrollments to 4A schools. A quality tournament that I'm sure any team that participated in felt like they had competed and learned something. It's essentially an early season mid-state regional.

 

I'm not sure why you are so down on the All A. It's just a tournament that has an entry requirement, you don't have to participate if you don't want or don't feel like you can compete, in fact some A Teams opt out because they don't believe they can. No harm, no foul.

 

Why would restrict the amount of opportunities for teams to play in a quality tournament just because we have entry requirements based on enrollment ? What's the animosity about ? The All A winner doesn't get a KHSAA trophy, nor do they get to go into the "official" KHSAA state tournament book for the rest of their lives. The do get to play through levels to get to a final and that is a good learning process for tournament play.

Holy cow! Wait a minute. I thought this was just one big tournament...you know a classic...an invitational...an in-season tournament. You mean you get rewards for winning segments of this tournament? I've played in a lot of tournaments and don't remember getting any rewards for getting to a certain point in a tournament. Most of the tournaments I played in reward the winner at the end. This opens up a whole new can of worms!

In the 9th Region Softball All "A" Regional tourney, no Champion and Runner-Up trophies have ever been given out , as well as, All-Tourney team plaques. However, banners, T-shirts, rings, etc....are another story.

There are plenty of other schools that are segmented out because there are lots of other tournaments in the state. Bourbon Co. has a nice tournament every year, for example, but it's just a tournament. Just because they call themselves the ALL A state champions does not mean they are KHSAA state champions. Nobody is getting confused by this distinction. It just means they won that tournament.

 

With that being said, congratulations to the Lady Breds on their 9th region championship! I know you will represent us well.

The crux of the matter right here. An All-A champion - regardless of the sport - is not recognized as a KHSAA state champion.

 

Why exactly is anybody's shorts in a bunch over this? Is someone calling their team a regional champ, or, heaven forbid, "state champs" when someone thinks that they shouldn't? And if so, what's the big deal?

 

Don't sweat the small (school) ​stuff.

RCC9 would you like to see the All A go away? I guess I just don't see how this event is detrimental to any involved in it.

 

We got close last year in it and I hate it for our girls that we lost Fri night to NCC to give us the opportunity to play in owensboro this year. As long as we are at St Henry and there is an All A tournament, we will make this tournament a priority. I'm sure if you were in our shoes or NCC's or any of the other 9th region teams, you would feel the same.

 

Obviously our ultimate goals are our district, 9th region and state but I'm not gonna downplay the All A when that opportunity is afforded to us. And yes we had shirts made last year commemorating our All A accomplishments. And we will again...hopefully in 2015 ?

From my perspective the All A is another example of the socialization of high school sports, i.e., let's spread the championship wealth to the little guys or the poorly funded programs throughout the state. I'm sorry, but if there is that much disparity throughout the state or if small schools are that needy for a so-called championship, then convince the KHSAA to have classes or divisions for all sports like football, track, and cross country sports. IMO, if you're not good enough or big enough to win a championship, deal with it! Heck, why not just give every player a participation medal or ribbon?

Not at all, I don't hate any classification. I'm just saying if classification is what we want, then let's all go to it so ALL kids have the chance to experience success on and equal playing field. Let's not just segment out all other schools.

I understand what RCC is saying. I used to fight this too my man, but it really isn't anything to get that worked up about.

 

The truth is if a 9th Region A team ever won the big tournament down state-the one in June-they wouldn't talk about the A so much. Truthfully in softball the talk is tame compared to basketball, but those schools deep down know the facts as they are. Let them have their couple of weeks of fun. Kind of like when a few upsets happen in the mens NCAA basketball tournament. It is fun for a while, but in the end, a big school from a power conference always wins it all.
