If there was a similar tournament for Highlands, you would jump all over it. But there's not so you have to talk all this crap about how it is not fair that the All A schools get this opportunity to experience some success. Oh, and if you are district runner-up this year, I guess you are going to tell your girls that they are not going to the regional tournament because that would be providing them another opportunity to experience success in which they didn't earn.

 

Nope, we'll play by the rules the KHSAA has put forth. And you're right, we would play if there were classifications set up by the KHSAA. And I never said anything bad about the teams choosing to play in it. I have actually said if we were small enough, we would play in it. It still wouldn't change my mind on the reason behind why most people defend the tournament. There would still be no reason to play it as a state championship and if you really knew me, you would know I would feel EXACTLY the same way. But I wouldn't deny my kids the chance to play in it if they wanted too. It's not about that...why can't you understand that. Again, has nothing to do with HHS or the teams that choose to play in it. It's the hypocracy of the people that defend it for reasons that aren't true or needed any longer.

 

I know there are two ways of thinking. NKY, who believe this is absolutely a state championship and a lot of times place more emphasis on this tournament than ANY other and the down state teams that seem to look at it as "just another tournament. So for the downstate teams, I understand your stance and agree with it. I "get it" from your perspective and I thank you for the education!

RCC9 you need to look at your record against Holmes, Holmes was in your district and yes Holmes was very good.

 

I'm not concerned with Holmes' record or how many wins HHS has against them. I'm using them as an example of a team that is not a small school and has never won the region or anything big in fastpitch softball. Where's their second chance? Why does someone else deserve a second chance and they don't?

And by the way, where did I say people don't deserve a second chance? If I said anything, I'm saying they alll deserve a second chance if you're going to provide a second chance for anyone. I'm saying don't tell me on one side of your mouth that you feel its' a good tournament because it provides opportunities and then when I bring up other schools that have never had any opportunities either, then it's "get your own tournament". Or "if they were smaller, they would get an opportunity". So please tell me why a few deserve it and the others don't.

If they finish 2nd in the district they earned the right to advance according to the rules laid out by the KHSAA. If you think RCC said something different please post the exact quote where he said it.

 

The way I read the intent of madman's post was...you could argue since team A finished 2nd in their district and didn't win it, they are essentially still given a 2nd chance at success since the 2nd place team is allowed to advance to the region by virtue of the rules. He was being somewhat tongue in cheek, but I see what he was getting at.

In this case, I agree with RCC9. HHS has academic programs that are superior to some of the other options in the county, and I say that having experienced 4 separate schools in the county. True that some do come to HHS for sports, and the majority would be for football reasons, but not the majority of students out of district come to HHS for football or other sports. HHS softball as been an afterthought at the school until the past couple years (No offense RCC, you know it's true). If you were a female and wanted to transfer for a spring sport think tennis.

 

Part of the problem with Ft Thomas is the lack of available housing to support everyone moving to the city to get their kid into HHS. The numbers just don't support it.

 

Many of the transfers into the district had parents that went to HHS…not any different than NCC, BBHS, NDA, CCH, etc…. If you want to use the "move into the district" idea, then you would have to support the same for the parochial schools.

 

Each year the Ft Thomas School system evaluates the number of available spots for students to enter or remain in their system. There is no guarantee that an out of district student gets in, it's purely numbers.

 

Don't confuse an outstanding football program with ALL sports at HHS. I can assure you it does not work that way. I would encourage you to compare the academic programs at HHS to any of the county parochial schools and public schools. Not that these schools don't have great academics, but the level of investment at Ft Thomas Schools goes beyond what is offered at the others. Mostly because they are 1) Independent and have better control of funds and 2) they remain a small to mid-sized school district.

 

If the only transfers anyone looks at are football related (aka "sports"), then you will certainly be blinded by the academic opportunities available within the district. Perception can be clouded by 20 state championships, reality speaks through the facts

 

I don't think anyone is complaining about kids choosing Highlands. To me, there's a school out there that's a right for for everyone. Be it independent, Catholic, big, small etc. However don't open your doors to everyone then complain you can't compete with the small schools because you're enrollment is too large. That's all some are saying. I don't think this thread was headed in the direction of education or anything of that nature until you guys took it there. It's ALL about numbers.

Did I say just softball??? No I just quoted your facts on numbers and the perception that is gives. To say that student/athletes do not transfer to HHS because of sports is also what I would seem to call "comical".

No no no...going the wrong direction with that. My whole arguement is noone needs to have this tournament act as a second chance. I'm being sarcastic. When someone uses the excuse that it's a great opportunity for the small schools because they don't get the opportunity to experience championship play because of the big schools, I can tell you that there are SEVERAL bigger schools that don't get that chance. They say it's great because of the opportunities it provides the kids, but I say it only provides that opportunity to a small group of kids. So if you're worried about all kids getting "other opportunities" or "a second chance to compete", then why are we doing something for ALL the kids and not just a few that happen to go to a small school...and choose to do so! Just like I said in another post...NCC and St. Henry will most likely run rule Holmes in softball. Those two schools get a separate opportunity to experience a regional championship and a trip to a state championship. They will run rule Holmes. Why do they deserve "a second chance" and Holmes doesn't. I'm saying they don't need a second chance. And just like my man Madman says, they will get their second chance if they happen to be the runner's up in their district...which by the way they won last year and were both 1 seeds going into the region. So again, they can't compete and need the All A to experience success??? C'mon! That's where I'm going with that.
