Biggest winners in this draft (6A only)

Scott County If I read the post season pairings correctly they will never face a Louisville school before the championship game. How many trips in a row do they have to make before people want them barred from the KHSAA? My guess is the KHSAA did this to appease McKee.

All of the NKY schools. They are assured no less then a 3 seed in the playoffs every year.

Trinity. The game with X won't end any time soon so they now have 5 games filled. The big question is will anyone else put on their big boy pants and step up to play them.

Biggest losers:

PRP and Butler: They go from being strong contenders for a district title every year to both potentially being perennial 4 seeds.

You're not reading it correctly.

Here's the wording:

"Playoff pairings rotation would rotate between 3, 4, 5 and 6 for the first 3 years of the 4 year alignment period. Year 1 would have 3 and 4 paired, 5 and 6 paired. Year 2 would have 3 and 5 paired, 4 and 6 paired. Year 3 would have 3 and 6 paired, 4 and 5 paired. Board will determine in May, 2014 as to length of time for the rotation of pairings beyond the third year."

What they haven't explicitly stated is some of the logical conclusions we can draw. Districts 1 & 2 will always be Region 1. Districts 7 & 8 will always be Region 4. That's virtually the way it is now, given that District 1 has always been Region 1 even while rotating with other districts, while District 8 has always been Region 4. Since 2 & 7 aren't mentioned to be in the mix with the pairings the KHSAA spelled out, it can safely be assumed that it will be as I described.

What will fluctuate are Regions 2 & 3, and that's the playoff pairings rotation they are describing. Going by the way they've done it in the past, District 3 will always be Region 2. Whatever district they are paired with will likewise be in Region 2, and then Region 3 will be the remaining two districts that are paired. So in 2015, yes, Scott County would avoid the Louisville schools, or at least those that don't finish 5th in Districts 3 & 4. Potentially those schools could win to make semi-state and face Scott County. But in 2016 & 2017, they could face a team from District 4, which gee whiz we'll just go ahead and say they'll face Trinity.

3 team districts and allowing 4 teams in a district to make the playoffs is ridiculous. Only the 1st and 2nd place team from each district should make the playoffs. Football season continuing after thanksgiving makes no sense IMO.

This is how I read it, in the state semis they could potentially in 16 and 17 face trinity and St. X based on their district being paired with D6 which would face the region winner of Region 4 or D7 & D8.

That being said why is there any rotation at all now that St. X and Trinity are not in the same district. No one else in the state rotates.

I will say that Scott Co and Jim McKee are getting too much credit for your assumptions and after taking Trinity and Quick and company to the wire and in '12 and winning it in '13 I don't think it matters who they play, you have to beat one of them to win the ring. I will predict that Male will and should be pre-season #1 in 6A

Must have been the people in charge of ObamaCare implementation as well..........

That's why the KHSAA needs to just pass this draft as is, so we can find out what is actually in it.

It's been like this for 20+ years that I know of, and maybe even longer. This hasn't been effected by the 6 classes.

Not a fan of 6 classes, either, but Kentucky is far from being alone with our state finals going into December. Matter of fact, I'd be willing to bet that it's more than 50/50 as far as those who finish after Thanksgiving...some go into the 2nd week of December.

I think it's a joke that football starts so early. Practice. Games. All of it.

Basketball is indoors. They can go whenever (I say that TIC, I know it's a winter/early spring sport and should continue to be as such).

I don't know a baseball coach out there (granted, I only personally know 4 HS Head Baseball coaches in our state), but NEITHER of them enjoy this playing half of their season crap on nights where you need a winter coat.

Not to hijack the thread, but backing the football season up to Labor Day weekend (which would be two weeks) would be good for all three (football, baseball and basketball). It would back basketball up two weeks, and obviously baseball (opening around the 1st week of April instead of Mid March).

The argument I hear about baseball is, "Well, it would then go into summer with the tourneys." (Implying that it would effect attendance). Well, baseball fans are baseball fans. The ones that go, will go whenever.....not to mention that MOST District tourneys these days are Memorial Day weekend (when most school districts are already out, if not for freakish snow day numbers like this year).

....the baseball finals would probably be that 2nd-3rd week of June. Make Dead period from June 31-July 31st.

...everybody Rock on.

Most region tournaments that I know of begin on Memorial Day itself. The reason for that is whether school is in or out, you can guarantee they'll be out that day 99.9% of the time. It provides a way to make sure there is pitching equity across the board. Everyone plays on the same days from that point forward in most formats, preventing a team from getting extra rest. Any delay in baseball scheduling would push that and eliminate any chance of doing that. Plus, like you said, now the finals would be in the 3rd week of June (since Memorial Day is going to be the last Monday in May most times, that means that tournament isn't starting until the second week of June with a delay). Pushing two weeks might mean that not only would the postseason be played after the end of the school year, in many cases they'll actually be done before the end of the regular season itself. Making it where some people can't even begin summer vacation until nearly the end of June is basically going to be a non-starter. Playing the football state finals two weeks later in the heart of December would be an even bigger disaster. The elements can devastate the finals and playing further into December increases the chance of unfavorable weather. Plus now you're going to get in like one week of basketball before the Christmas break.

I guess it was Region Tourney's that I was thinking of.

Fair points...or, they just make it to where baseball has a max of 30 regular season games instead of the added 36 like they just recently did (or am I dreaming that)? That alone would push the start week back to around the 1st week of April.

As far as basketball is concerned, I don't mean to sound harsh here...afterall, my favorite sports are 1. Football 1A. Golf 1B. Basketball (that's right, not even enough between the three to list them 1, 2 and 3), but they are indoors. Starting the week before Christmas Break, and the Sweet 16 being that Last week of March compared to starting the last week of November till Mid-March is Potatoe, Potato IMO.

As for football, the end date wouldn't need to be backed up but a week (or none as far as my example will show) with either of the following scenarios using this years calendar (do away with Week 0/allowed Bye week..whichever).

8/29- Wk 1

9/5- Wk 2

9/12- Wk 3

9/19- Wk 4

9/26- Wk 5

10/3- Wk 6

10/10- Wk 7

10/17- Wk 8

10/24- Wk 9

10/31- Wk 10

11/7- 1st Round

11/14- 2nd Round

11/21- 3rd Round (Region Finals)

11/28- 4th Round (Semis..Turkey Day weekend)

12/5-12/6- State Finals

.....OR......

....if the KHSAA is worried about getting teams an 11th game (really all the purpose that 99.9% of all 4 seeds going to the playoffs are accomplishing, which is good in theory), then fine; make it an 11 game regular season. Take the top 3. Number 1 seeds get a bye and still use the above format, but the 1st round becomes Week 11, 2nd round becomes 1st round...so on and so on.

....Or....

If keeping the bye week is a must, push it back another week. I'm no meteorologist, but I'm just taking a stab that the 2nd Weekend in December isn't all that much more brutal than the 1st weekend.

As for baseball going another week or two into June and Summer break; with our current dead period, I could totally understand the frustration of baseball parents..especially if their sons double up as football, but I'd be willing to bet that if you told them we are going to push back the start date, thus pushing back the end date...and, giving them a 3-4 week Dead Period in July...most would consider that a fair trade.

I mean, here it was last night....I go to watch my little brothers baseball game last night, their 15th of the season (not counting games cancelled and unable to make up) and I have my long johns on and my winter Carhartt jacket.

Baseball with their early start has become a winter feeling sport for most of the year, and football has become a summer sport, when it should be a fall.

I was talking to another guy today about the numbers of kids who seem to fall off in football between Little League and High School. I get that there are other factors, but there is absolutely zero doubt in my mind that a large part of it has to do with, "Let's see. In LL, we didn't start practice until school starts and in HS, I can either go to practice in the gates of He11 heat in mid July & do this for ANOTHER 6 WEEKS until our 1st GAME....Or...I can go to the pool/creek/camping/golf course/county fair/Florida with my friends and family?" Tough decision there.

I don't know. I don't mean to gripe or even sound like it...just seems like there would be a much better way(s) of tweaking things for all involved. I've always been one that kind of beat to his own drum, some for the good..some not, but parts of these ideas seem rather logical I would HOPE. If not, I'll continue living life off my rocker just a tad. :ylsuper:

Football is just 2 hours a day; plenty of time for those other things.

But I agree with you. The seasons need to be adjusted with today's climate.

In all seriousness, what would be the harm with basketball opening with holiday tournaments later in December.

For the most part I agree with you but then you would get the rare occurrence from a few years ago where Cooper was the #3 with a 9-1 record while South Oldham and Conner were the #1 and #2 with 7-3 and 8-2 records.

It's been like this for 20+ years that I know of, and maybe even longer. This hasn't been effected by the 6 classes.

Very true. Totally agree from my standpoint, amazing how the summer time it becomes a much harder 2 hours to fit in...which, I get.

You said it with the last part, I have NO idea what it would hurt with basketball. Is what it is...70 degrees and sunny, whether they start in December, June, whenever.

Heck. They never stop! ;)

Must have been the people in charge of ObamaCare implementation as well..........

But Obamacare is a success, isn't it? They beat enrollment projections, costs are being controlled and the online system is working fine now that they have the kinks out ... right? :sssh:

Sorry for the distraction from the thread ... you set it up so well I just had to throw that in there.

Heck. They never stop! ;)

True story there.

...936 game June season.

Wonder what would happen if football had a full 'season' like that, 5-6 months before their actual season? lol
