NFL to flag goal posts dunk

Not only is the New Orleans Saints' Jimmy Graham re-defining the tight end position, but he has also inspired an NFL rule change. According to the league's vice president of officiating, players will no longer be allowed to dunk the ball over the goal post after touchdowns.

 

Dean Blandino confirmed the rule change during a radio interview with the "The Dan Patrick Show" on Tuesday. He said dunking the ball over the crossbar will now be considered a foul along with other touchdown celebrations that involve props.

Always considered it rather impressive to be able to dunk a football with all that gear on.

Why not let them celebrate how they want? What does it hurt when some one dunks the ball over the goalpost??

Well the game itself is great...for now. If they keep changing rules (kickoffs and extra points are two examples) I might agree.

A game was delayed last year to fix a goalpost when Jimmy Graham did one of his dunks, and knocked it out of alignment. According to ESPN, it's happened twice because of Graham. I'm guessing that would be the big reason this rule would be implemented.

Normally I agree with all the No Fun League talk, but I'm actually with them on this one. I thought it was dumb and a waste of time last year when Graham dunked it and delayed the game by knocking the goalposts off balance. Only reason I'm for this rule. I didn't mind the dunking at all, don't mind most of the other celebrations, but I'm not about wasting time because these guys can about tear the goalposts down.

So, is the Lambeau Leap outlawed now too? Seems to me that if you consider the goal post a prop, then the stadium would be too, wouldn't it? Gonna be some mighty mad Packer fans.

Don't think so. It had been grandfathered in along with the dunk over the goalpost. But again, with the two Jimmy Graham incidents where the goalpost was knocked out of alignment, they decided to outlaw the dunk.

If you break the goalpost then penalize him. If the goalpost stays intact then there is no harm, no foul.

 

Pretty weak and a knee-jerk reaction by the NFL.
