I think its rather clear what Russia is doing as if things progressed as they did, they wouldn't have the pro-Russia government that was previously running under Ukraine's previous president. However, that doesn't mean we should get involved in this dilemma because it really isn't our problem. Those who should feel like its their problem is the rest of the EU and they are the ones that should be pressuring Russia as they will have the biggest impact.

 

As for the U.S. involvement in the other countries you listed.... if its not our problem we shouldn't get involved. Afgahnistan was fine, Iraq probably not, and the others are a definite no for sure.

Not only has Vladimir Putin’s regime become more corrupt, anti-democratic, and nationalist at home, but it is now pressuring Ukraine into a choice between Russia and the West. Westerwelle joined demonstrators in Kyiv in support of a Ukrainian agreement with the EU, while German President Joachim Gauck has just announced that he will not be attending the Sochi Olympic Games this winter. This follows more than a year of increasingly critical comments by Merkel on the state of affairs in Russia and has led to a deep freeze in her personal relationship with Putin.

 

Germany Faces Tough Choices on Russia

 

I spend a lot of time in Europe and especially Germany. What will be interesting to me, is what will the EU do? My guess, nothing. I have long said that I believe the Europeans strongly influenced our political scene in the last 6 years, and I believe they were strong advocates of "change". Why, because a weaker US was believed to be in the best interests of especially the Germans and Russians. Both of these countries are both also aligned with Iraq and Iran so US policy there has been a direct affront to them. Also, I believe as a country, the US has become very weak-minded and more concerned about local social issues than either global economic, democracy or human rights. I am concerned we are getting ever closer to a triad of Germany/Russia/China who will coalesce and rule the world. We, of course, will stand by and argue about marijuana legalization, gay marriage, gun laws and unemployment extensions.

Maybe Russia is also trying to prevent it from becoming another Chechnya. They have that right IMO.

I wonder what the Russians citizens feel about this? My guess is free speech is so stifled in Russia that the are being fed propaganda rather than anything close to the truth.

You've puzzled me a lot in this thread, mountainref, so I'm forced to ask: where do you stand on this? Are you on board with Russia's actions here? If so, then why are you worried about whether the response from our government is overly weak?

I guess if it could be proven that the terrorist attacks recently in Russia have been sponsored by Ukraine, Putin would have an argument for the invasion but to the best of my knowledge that assertion has not been made.

I dont care what Russia does with the Ukraine It is their neck of the woods and not ours. They know more about those problems than we do.

 

As for the US, Obaba aint got the guts to stand up to Putin. All he can do is order drones to shoot people. Or keep delaying the health care stuff he said was so great.

There's basically nothing we can do about it.

 

In this situation, with our allies opposed to further intervention, we're stuck with nowhere else to go. I had hoped that maybe we could work something out with our EU partners, but I don't think that's going to happen. They're busy doing one of two things: 1) just wanting to make sure the gas doesn't get shut off for the rest of the winter (Germany, Italy, and France) or 2) really enjoying all the super-rich Russians that pump cash into their countries (Great Britain, Switzerland).
