I travel about 10 - 15 days a month, mostly by air. I take my iPod with me and listen to music mostly with it. I currently have earplugs which are uncomfortable, so I am going to buy some headphones and want really good quality. I have heard a lot about Beats and see they are around $275 for the latest model. I don't mind making the investment, if they are really good and the best for that $$ amount. Is this a waste and should I look for something a little cheaper? What would be better brand with this quality that might be cheaper or should I just plunk the $$ down and get the Beats.

I read an article from consumer reports or somewhere that I can't recall now that they didn't perform any better than some $25 pairs they had tested. I'd save $250 and buy them but then again I'd never in a million years pay almost $300 for headphones.

Thanks and you may be correct. I am really a novice at this kind of stuff. I have a cheap $30 set and they sound very good, but they are not very durable and the earflaps fell off. I really want the comfort on long flights, but I did think that $300 was over the top and I am just wondering if I am missing something.

I have a pair of these Audio-Technicas and I couldn't be happier. They collapse and fit into a small bag. The cord on these is fairly long as they are meant for a studio, which could be a nuisance. At any rate, you don't need to pony up Beats-level money to get a quality pair, and if you did want to pony up that cash you could do way better.

Thanks I'll check them out. I can pony up the money, it's just I want to make sure it is worth it. Seems like they may be overpriced.

I also didn't find the earbuds that came with the iPod / iPhone to be comfortable at all. I purchased a pair of iFrogz at Wal-Mart for around $10. These do go inside the ear but I found them to be very comfortable. I am pleased with the sound quality, however, to each their own. I would imagine that you could find very good headphones for half the cost of Beats. I believe that alot of what you are paying for with Beats is the association with Dr. Dre and that fact that you see them being worn by a lot of NBA players.

 

I looked up headphone reviews on Cnet.com and they had the iFrogz and Beats earbuds both rated at 3.5 stars. Biggest difference in the comparison was the cost.

I have the iFrogz. Both my boys have Beats. There's no question that the Beats are remarkably better. But no chance as hard as I am on stuff that I'd do the more expensive.

Yes, I am hard on things, also. That's probably why my last pair is missing the ear flaps now. I mentioned Beats to my wife last night while we were killing time and just shopping. I went to electronics because I had seen the ads and commercials about Beats. They were sold out and I didn't ask a price. So as we were flying back from Atlanta tonight, she went to one of the electronics shop while I was getting us something to eat and she said they were $275 and she would go get them if I wanted. I said I think that is really expensive, let me look some more. I wasn't sure if the airport was gouging. Looks like they weren't.

Way too expensive. You are paying for the name only, the headphones themselves aren't any better than a set you can get for $50-$100

 

If I were going to spend that much I would invest in the Bose noise reduction. But I'm not investing that much.

The Beats headphones are more of a status symbol thing than anything else.

One night I preached a mini sermon about the escessiveness of $200 headphones and how if my kids thought that we were a $200 headphone family they were clearly wrong.

 

Currently we own 3 pair.
