Hatton and Ruthsatz Countdown Thread

Featured Replies

I have seen both more than once and Draud was the better shooter IMO. He did not create shots, as well as BH or drive to the hoop. But he was a better shooter. This is not a negative on BH at all. I believe he is the MVP in the region this year. Draud also carried that onto Vandy where the 3 point shot came into play for him against high level D1 defenders and he scored. I expect BH will be successful at Vermont, also.

I am not sure how many years Draud started at Highlands, but I don't think it was 6, probably 4. But I could be wrong. I am not sure what year he transferred there, 7th grade or 9th.

Draud went to HHS from 9th - 12th grade.

He played some as a frosh - that was Willie Schlarman, Jeff Kremer senior year. Played little varsity.

He played some as a sophomore - that was Rich Maile, Ricky Lankheit, Bob Burkart senior year. Played quite a bit.

He was the main offensive threat his junior and senior years.

The following is based off the stats on the KHSAA website (so they may not be completely correct) and I am only basing this off Brandon's HS years as the MS years are incomplete stats wise.

4 Year Totals up to today

107 Games

2,243 Pts

2 Pt Shots: 473/934 (.506)

3 Pt Shots: 239/580 (.412)

Combined: 712/1,514 (.470)

Free Throws: 580/713 (.813)

20.96 Pts/Game

14.14 Shots/Game

I know Draud averaged 29 shots per game his senior year but don't know his shots per game in his other years so the following is based on lower averages of shots per game.

Numbers based on 22 shots/gm with no 3-pt line

2,354 shots

1,106 made baskets (based on .470 shooting percentage)

2,212 points on shots

580 made FTs (same as real life)

2,792 total points

26.09 pts/game

Numbers based on 20 shots/gm with no 3-pt line

2,140 shots

1,005 made baskets (based on .470 shooting percentage)

2,010 points on shots

580 made FTs (same as real life)

2,590 total points

24.21 pts/game

Numbers based on 18 shots/gm with no 3-pt line

1,926 shots

905 made baskets (based on .470 shooting percentage)

1,810 points on shots

580 made FTs (same as real life)

2,390 total points

22.34 pts/game

Now note that this season is not over yet so Brandon has more games to play and would get more points. Also, note that this doesn't include points that he obtained or would have obtained in his middle school years. So Draud's record would possibly be beat by Hatton without a 3 point line if he averaged more shots per game.

Good info, but they were very different types of players. Good comparison, though.

I started a conversation with one of my brothers the other day, and he's apparently following VERY closely. I got these two messages today:

Ruthsatz has just in the last three games (38, 25, 31) upped his career ppg average above Roger Tieman’s

Frankly, there are several players (Jake Thelen recently) who have ppg averages better than A. Listerman and Purdon. They are only atop the list by virtue of playing Varsity as freshman.

Not having all the stats at my disposal (besides the career leader only on CCH website), I’d argue Thelen as one of the best all time considering his scoring plus surely more rebounds than A Listerman/Purdon/Tieman (maybe). Also Jake Thelen’s supporting cast wasn't particularly good his junior and senior years – remember the “because my son is worth it” anonymous email campaign – freakin' ridiculous. But anyway, that was Thelen’s senior year.

At his current pace 22.1 ppg this year with 13 games left (8 reg season + 2 district + 3 regional), he’ll finish with 1,943 for his career. So a deep run down state (final four) or a few crazy scoring nights (35-40 pointers) coupled with no more off nights will be necessary him to reach 2,000.

Also still currently on pace to break A. Listerman in the Cooper game, though a few more 30 point games and it could be Conner the night before…

Also, also currently on pace for 728 points this season, which would be short of the single season records, below. Though as we (should) all know, scoring in the 60’s into the early 70’s was waaaay higher across the board because defense wasn’t played as we know it (still a non-contact game) I’m pretty certain Ruthsatz faced a tougher schedule than ole Fess’ back in ’62.

Most Points Scored 762 Mike Fessler 1961-62

Highest Point/Game Avg. 25.4 Mike Fessler 1961-62

One thing to think about...as prolific a scorer as he (Draud) was, he didn't win 9th region player of the year his senior year. Anyone who was around care to name who won it and why??

David Dinn at Boone won it.

Why would be opening an old can of worms and opening up some old wounds.

Ask Ken Shields in private, or wait until the Shields book comes out (hopefully in 2014).

Draud! The young man could indeed shot the ball and if he had the 3 point shot like they have today, Hatton would be no where near Draud! He was that deadeye of a shooter!

IMHO Ruthsatz. Ruth refuses to lose, works harder in practice than anyone I have seen and in the off season, there isn't one, he his brothers and sisters live in the gym and you keep any eye out for young Mr Roland Ruthsatz, as the kid has the love and desire to be a great ball player one day. How old is Roland? Maybe four/five but just remember what I have told you, trust me........

I think Ruthsatz' offensive game has more to it than Andy's dad but I don't want people to get the wrong impression by your post and think that Nick outworked Andy. Andy's game was effort and grit as well as skill.

Over inflated stats...meaning it took him a lot more shots to get that record than it will take Hatton. Chevy will tell you himself that he has probably cost Hatton atleast 300 points throughout his career by not playing him in blowouts like Draud did during his career. Am I not right in that? Is that not why he didn't win player of the year his senior year? Because Kenny would run the score up and leave Draud in to continue to score? The kid from Boone who went on to Wright St won player of the year Draud's senior year. Obviously a great talent, but what separated the two? I wasn't around, which is why I'm asking. Coaches thought higher of him for a reason.

Where are you getting this from? You are getting some bad information.

Hatton and Draud are different type of players! Hatton has good body control and can get to the hoop and score. Scott was a pure shooter had the best stroke I have ever seen. He had in the gym range and I would always speculate invisible designated spots on the floor to shoot from! Both great players! Walter trust me Scott was special. He had a lot of did he just do that moments. Pure shooter

Two separate questions: You can pick one who do you take to lead your team? Draud or Hatton both in their HS prime

Same question but with Listerman or Ruthsatz?

As one who has seen all of four of the above many, many times (including the aforementioned Dave Dinn, who was a friend in high school, so I'm not terribly objective on that one), I wanted to offer my two cents.

In the Draud / Hatton argument, I would take Scott Draud over Brandon Hatton although it is close. Scott was certainly a better shooter, and I'd give him the nod as an overall offensive player as well, but I would say I think Hatton is a better passer (an attribute of his that I think is often under-appreciated). Draud had ridiculous range as well, and although Brandon's is solid too, Draud's was deeper. It needs to be mentioned, one went to an SEC school and one to a MEAC school....college coaches then, and now, are pretty good at determining your water level.

I don't think the Nick Ruthsatz / Andy Listerman debate is quite as close, to be honest. I think Nick's game is much better than Andy's, overall, and in many ways, if you've watched CovCath for years you'll get this, I think Nick is a combination of Andy's game and Kevin's game. Andy was a nice player and had a nice career, but Nick handles it better, drives it better, and is tougher to defend than Andy was. Andy was a better defensive player than Nick, and both rebound well for their position on the floor. I was never in a locker-room with either, but I'd bet that Andy was the better leader of the two.

If I understand correctly Brandon Hatton is 50 points away from tying Scott Draud's mark for the 9th region scoring record. If I understand correctly CCH's Nick Ruthsatz is 60 points away from tying the CCH scoring record which is currently held by Andy Listerman. Let the countdown begin for both.

Mark Wehry tells me that Nick is actually 75 away. If KHSAA site is correct then he he had 1215 coming in plus 441 thus far.

David Dinn at Boone won it.

Why would be opening an old can of worms and opening up some old wounds.

Sounds like politics to me.

Looking forward to the Shields book, but when are you writing one???

I think you are referring to Nolan Ruthsatz.
