If you were taught on a typewriter you probably use two.

 

Typewriters back in the day had all letters and characters take up the same amount of space. (Two spaces inserted here) So typing teachers taught us to use two spaces after a period for visual impact.

 

That's no longer the case. Periods are narrower so you don't need to two spaces after a period.

I was taught two in my high school typing class. I probably still use two a majority of the time now just out of habit, without really thinking about it.

I've never heard of using two. It defaults to one space in Word. Why use 2?

If I don't it's on accident. Once I got to where I could type without having to look at the keyboard, things just sort of happen naturally. Once my right ring finger hits to "." key it's just naturally causes my thumb to tap the space bar twice.

I've ways used two unless I was on a mobile phone. Not really certain when I picked it up.
