Question for you NKY folks

If you were there at that game you would have known that a player was inserted into the game to basically attack Desmond and landed several blows (action was away from the ball) before the refs or coaches or other players could get to fracas. The refs ejected both players as all they could see was two players grappling on the floor. In my opinion, not only should have the injunction been granted, but the opposing Coach who inserted the player (who was not a starter or top sub) should have been suspended for the next season.

You are correct. My daughter played in that game along side of Desmond. I was filimg the game and caught all of the action on film before the refs did. They sent my tape to the KHSAA and this is one (if not the main reason she got to play the next game). Holmes coach should have not been aloud to coach again, you could see him telling the girl what to do before she went into the game. One thing to do take Desmond out of the game.

First of all, I love how my simple question turned into a 6 page debate.

My followup questions would have to be... If Cordia is not the only team in the state that has transfers, is the only reason they catch heat from other fan bases is because of the number of them (10 out of 13 players I believe are tranfers) or is it where they come from or what??? If Cordia were 0-24, would anyoone care??? How many transfers does a school have to get before some people say, "Hey! If you're going to do that, turn into a prep school!"?

I think the biggest problem with Cordia is, and I may be alone, nut this is how I feel anyway.

1. The reason being given for the transfers.

If they were transferring because of academics (which I believe was what was being reported) why would they come all the way to KY when I'm sure there are schools in their home states that could help them academically. Also why go to Cordia when they are ranked 213th in the state academically?

2. If Roderick Rhodes hadn't come out saying he wants Cordia Basketball to be a prep school team such as Oak Hills etc. Which tells everyone recruting is going on even if they don't come right out and say it.

That isn't even stating the fact that 10 out of the 13 players on the team are all transfers.

This issue comes up at least 2-3 times per year on this Forum and most everyone who comments has a legitimate point; complaint or support for the current rule. In my opinion, it's not a private vs' public question nor is it a right vs' wrong question; it's a legal question. How can the KHSAA fairly enforce a law that's not fairly enforceable. It has too many loopholes, is influenced by too many special interest individuals and groups and is enforced in the end by one (1) individual (The KHSAA Commissioner) regardless of the advisory status of the Board of Control, and other KHSAA entities who participate in the farce. In the end, the kids are the ones losing here so we should demand that it be made fair and simple to understand: make everyone eligible for a 1 time transfer, make no one eligible without setting out 1 year, or any other simple, concise statement that everyone can underrated prior to attempting a transfer and that applies to everyone the same regardless of the circumstances.

At that point, this controversy disappears!

Would your way make it easier? Yep, it would. Would it make it more "fair" or equitable? I would argue it would make it LESS fair. Here's why.

The way it's done now, every case is looked at individually. Is every decision the KHSAA makes correct? Probably not, I'm sure there is a percentage of the cases that are reviewed where the wrong decision, one way or the other is made. On the other hand, if the rule was everybody gets one free transfer, or everybody sits one year...to me those two choices are much worse that what is currently in place. Everybody gets a "free" transfer, you have tons of kids jumping around, many more than now. That's not right in my opinion. If everybody were made to sit, then you have a LOT of legitimate transfers being punished. That's not right either. There is no perfect system I don't think, but I believe the way it is currently is better than either of those two options. With that said, there are definitely improvements that could be made to the current system as well.

I WANT to send my youngest to a different HS. There is no "if."

He can play. He has a future in bball. Right now, I like certain coaches and, if the decision were entirely up to me, I'd send him to one of 3 schools... schools with coaches who are good "teachers of the game."

Please describe future. And who are the only 3 good teachers of the game?

Desmomds daddy wrote a check so she could play. Hey she was a transfer too. Went to NDA as a freshman

Just tossing this out. Could you imagine how good Walton would be this year with the McNeil brothers and Moeves Brothers still there?

They had a pretty darn good team before those kids left.

I've made the point in other threads on this topic, it's actually a worse scenario when players transfer from neighboring schools or counties to play for another school than it is if they transfer from places like Toronto or New Jersey. In the first example the school is receiving players from a school in their immediate area, and it hurts that school's program. Many of these kids come up through the grade school programs of the school only to be lost to a school just down the road, who reaps the benefits of their talent. On the other hand, a player who transfers from Canada is not an issue with their old school in Toronto, who is probably more concerned about their next hockey team much more than basketball. Same thing with the big city schools in the northeast, the players wanting out of those schools are just another fish in a big ocean. They probably feel they won't be missed among the multitude of other players and it might be better for them to find a better and safer place to go to school, and one in which they will be more appreciated. These kids at Cordia would never receive the attention they're now getting if they were still in their old neighborhoods.

A lot has been made on here about the distance that a transfer is moving from. It has been noted in various ways that it's AOK if the transfer is a county or two away, but there is definitely something not good if they are from out of state. Well, I surmise that it is actually more hurtful to be the beneficiary of your neighbor's hard work than to do likewise from someone 800 miles away, who in most cases could give a big flip about who transfers from their schools.

One more thing, some on here are putting quite a bit of faith in all the decisions rendered by the KHSAA. But you know, they're human too. They sometimes make mistakes, wrong decisions. They sometimes play favorites with decisions on certain schools due to bias opinions or someone on the board who knows someone who also knows someone, etc, that may help result in certain schools getting a little more positive rulings than other schools who got a negative ruling for the same situation. I'm a former AD so I do have some experience and observations in these sort of things over the years.

I assume you are talking about me in a lot of this. Let me put it to you this way. I don't care about the distance or comparing a cross-county kid to an out of state kid. Or debating which situation has more effect on a neighboring school. Or whether a certain group of coaches has a coup against Cordia. All of that is just debating points of the discussion. I'm about what is right and wrong. Not all transfers are right. We can all come up with examples of where we didn't agree with a ruling on a transfer. But we know ALL the facts that were presented in every case. I doubt it. And if we did, do we know the thought process behind the rulings...I doubt it. And do we all know ALL the rules and interpretation of the rules as well as the KHSAA...I doubt it.

Bottom line, there is something that is drasticlly different about a kid or group of kids that are transferring that distance to a school that has a coach that has publicly stated that he would like to make Cordia a school that is allowed to recruit (basically) and the majority of his team is transfers. These kids are showing up from 800 miles away that previously had no idea this school even existed or that this part of KY even existed until someone told them about it. The distance does add to the suspision, as well as the number of kids. If it was just one thing that was suspicious, I'd buy into some of the arguments. But it's multiple things that don't add up. The reason given is for education, really? Then why Cordia in KY? Does that really make sense? That's not a knock on Cordia at all, but they are not in the top of KY and KY is not in the top of the nation as far as schools go. C'mon, you can't really believe that and that is another reason in itself is another reason to make it so suspicious. You can't look at all the one-off statements I made. You have to put them all together and then the coincidneces just don't add up. If all the "what ifs" that people are using to defend it would add up, then the stars have absolutely aligned for these kids and they are doing the right thing...

Here's some of the argument on their behalf:

They are here for acedemics? Questionable

KHSAA has made wrong decisions in the past. Questionable

They like Rhodes and sought him out. Questionable

Rhodes said he didn't recruit them. Yes he said that, but Questionable

Rhodes' statements about making it a prep school has nothing to do with them showing up or the other 10 kids. Very suspicious.

Needed a better enviroment. Questionable. Do we know where they lived exactly?

Distance is just a coincidence. Questionable

Family member did of didn't move (temporarily). Questionable

It's just a group of upset coaches going to the KHSAA. Questionable

These are just a few "coincidences".

I agree when a kid transfers from one community to another, there is a bigger impact. Not debating that at all. But when that happens, the answers of "why" are much easier to understand. They know the school, they like the coach and program, they want to play with kids they grew up playing with, the other school provides a perceived better education, they have parents that are alums or connected to the other school, they don't like their current situation. When they are more familiar with the area and the surroundings, I am more willing to understand the "why". Yes, you can say any of those (except maybe wanted to play with buddies) can be true with these kids as well. However, it's much more far-fetched and tougher to believe with kids coming from that far away and have absolutely no idea of the area. And if it were just one, I'd probably give them more benefit of doubt. But C'mon, you and everyone else in the state knows what's happening here.

Are you really saying there is no reason to scrutinize these transfers anymore than you would any other transfer?

We can debate back and forth to no end, but forgotten in all this is the KHSAA made a ruling on Cordia's transfers and a judge in Frankfort ruled the KHSAA's decision null and void, that it had no merit. He ruled the players to be immediately eligible to play sports for their new school. I'm sure he, or she, didn't just make a knee-jerk decision, rather he reviewed all aspects of the case from both sides and ruled that the KHSAA and made a wrong decision, and by means of the state's legal system he overturned it.

As I said in my earlier post, the KHSAA is not always right or fair in all their decisions. They have pressure put on them sometimes too, and in this case I have a suspicion that some of that pressure has come from some of the same schools in Cordia's region that has their own sordid history of questionable transfers in past years and decades. And this transfer business is not just an issue in the 14th region either. I still say once again that the open policy transfers in the more populous counties of the state far out weighs any transgressions that little Cordia is being accused.

When would you like to schedule a personal guided tour of the school on the "hill". :sssh::lol2:

Lol! yeah, pretty sure you cant do that. Even if that was in jest. Some people may take that the wrong way.

This one has more than ran it's course. Some of the posts we allowed some latitude, but others are way out of bounds.
