Throw in the Burns kid who is at Brossart and another kid who I think transferred to Gallatin Co who was a nice Power Forward. Potential 8th Region champs for sure.

I just have a question. We are sitting here comparing NCC to Cordias, but no one has said anything about McClendon transferring back to Holmes or Changes transferring to Holmes. Why is that?

I dont know the facts but last time I checked Walton Verona scored pretty high on test scores and has a top notch academic environment.

 

I think you have a combination of kids being inspired to go to particular schools where certain coaches were and players wanting to have opportunities to win championships. Throw in some conflicts with some personalities at the Administrative level....and these are just assumptions.

Here's a thought as well. If the parents sell a house in the Walton Verona school district and move to another school district (for whatever reason), they can't go to Walton Verona any longer. Doesn't Boone County Board of Ed have closed enrollment? So if the Burns family moves to Alexandria, he is no longer able to attend Walton. The same with McNeil, Moeves and I believe McCubbin that moved to Gallatin County. Maybe this is part of what constitutes a valid change of address. I guess the KHSAA has the authority to deny the request waiving the mandatory 1-year ineligibility and these are looked at on a case by case basis.

 

Again, I don't know that this is the case in all of these instances, but selling a house and buying another in a different school system seems to be more easily accepted as a permanent or valid change of address.

Boone County does have a closed enrollment, however it seems if the parents press for the kids to transfer in the county, it is just a matter of filling out a few forms. It usually goes unnoticed unless the kid is a good athlete (i.e. Sydney Moss). The Boone board of education has 7000 high school students plus in its system. These transfers are not at the top of their list.

Walton Verona is an Independant school. If Joey lives in Ryle district wants to go to Walton all he has to do is enroll and if there is enough room in the grade they can attend. There is a fee that is associated with this. I am not sure how they do this now. When I went to Walton I lived out of the district and had to pay $500 a year to attend. I do believe that out of district students do have to maintain a certain academic level to stay in the system though. If they drop below a certain GPA then they are reviewed before the BOE.

Disagree with you here. If I choose to send my kids to another school before they play a varsity sport, they are not "TRANSFERS" This is the same foolish garbage I read on here about Ben Weyer going to middle school at Highlands and then to NCC as a frosh. Choice made, not a TRANSFER.

I, by the way, am in the same boat. I want to send my youngest to the school that is the best for developing his talents. In this case basketball is the talent.

 

If I had a kid that was gifted in dance or music I would probably send him to the school for performing arts... and no one would raise an eyebrow.

 

What is wrong about wanting to maximize your child's ability? And why should the rules be different if said child has played varsity sports already? There should not be any rules around "transfers." Or, as someone said in another thread, every kid should get one transfer option with "no questions asked."

 

The rule that needs to be enforced is "recruiting" by schools/coaches. I know of two schools who have actively recruited over the past year (one in football, the other in basketball). The football player is best friends with my son, so I've heard FIRSTHAND how often a certain school has contacted both him and his mom. The other case, I heard straight from the basketball coach's mouth at an open gym during the summer.

 

Recruiting is bad. A parent and child choosing what is/or isn't best for them is good. And sometimes it takes a year of playing a varsity sport to figure that out.

First of all, I love how my simple question turned into a 6 page debate.

 

My followup questions would have to be... If Cordia is not the only team in the state that has transfers, is the only reason they catch heat from other fan bases is because of the number of them (10 out of 13 players I believe are tranfers) or is it where they come from or what??? If Cordia were 0-24, would anyoone care??? How many transfers does a school have to get before some people say, "Hey! If you're going to do that, turn into a prep school!"?

Believe me, I tried really hard to convince my oldest to "transfer" to NCC prior to this season. He likes "drinking the koolaide" for some reason... maybe he gets that from his mom.

I WANT to send my youngest to a different HS. There is no "if."

 

He can play. He has a future in bball. Right now, I like certain coaches and, if the decision were entirely up to me, I'd send him to one of 3 schools... schools with coaches who are good "teachers of the game."

This issue comes up at least 2-3 times per year on this Forum and most everyone who comments has a legitimate point; complaint or support for the current rule. In my opinion, it's not a private vs' public question nor is it a right vs' wrong question; it's a legal question. How can the KHSAA fairly enforce a law that's not fairly enforceable. It has too many loopholes, is influenced by too many special interest individuals and groups and is enforced in the end by one (1) individual (The KHSAA Commissioner) regardless of the advisory status of the Board of Control, and other KHSAA entities who participate in the farce. In the end, the kids are the ones losing here so we should demand that it be made fair and simple to understand: make everyone eligible for a 1 time transfer, make no one eligible without setting out 1 year, or any other simple, concise statement that everyone can underrated prior to attempting a transfer and that applies to everyone the same regardless of the circumstances.

 

At that point, this controversy disappears!
