I can assure you that there are a lot of teachers at DHS and admin at Danville BOE that hope you are wrong.

 

He is a very positive presence in the building at DHS. (talking from a teaching and team player point of view)

I have lived in Garrard County all my life and love Garrard County but I have seen alot of crap go on at that school. All I ever hear is "it's going to get better". Well it hasn't...whether it be athletics, academics or whatever. I'm going to tell you like it is and if you don't like it then so be it. I could go into more detail about other things dealing with academics but I don't because this is a sports forum......so trust me when I tell you I DON"T trust "the man" that is responsible for this football coaching hire. I as much as anyone want the kids of Garrard County to succeed in everything they do and the citizens of Lancaster should demand that it happen. There needs to be some major changes in the school and this coaching hire would be a good start.

 

Believe me when I tell you the longer it goes on the less likely that Coach Perry will be the new coach.

With that being said the group of young men on the team this year can compete for a district title and make a run at region "if" they make the right hire and Jerry Perry would be a perfect fit.

I am a tax paying citizen of Garrard County. I'm not in education but am an educated person that knows what has gone on in the school system for a LONG time and I don't deal in terms of Oscar Mayer Bolgna.......I deal in terms of facts and the fact is they have had a hard time hiring the right coach's for their sports programs. Yes, I love GC but don't have to agree with the things that go on at the school. I know a lot of those young men on the football team and have watched them grow up....they are good bunch of kids that deserve better than a school system that settles to hire a coach because the best candiate isn't a "yes" person or a tool for the principle.

 

Trust me when I tell you that the Jerry Perry hire ISN'T a done deal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's ashame because he should arleady be hired!

There is without question that Jerry Perry is the best guy for the job, for many of the reasons already given (Hodge, and Hester too...all have strong ties to the program/community and all WIN & do it with class.)

 

But, there is just soooooooooo much that goes into this thing other than wanting and hiring.

 

For one, he has one more year to teach before he is elligible for full retirement in the KTRS, which could allow him to do a number of things such as "double dip", going from public to private since they are two seperate pensions/organizations.

 

Example of that would be Ron Koontz, who is the HC at Bethlehem. Koontz taught for 27 years in the public schools, coached as well...retired from Bardstown High, took the job at Bethlehem...long story short, he is now making the JACK.

 

Secondly, his son is a senior. Garrard would be his 3rd high school; which I don't believe would be that big of an issue. It's not like he isn't acquainted with the arean. He knows people there & he is just an overall great kid, that can, has and will adapt to anywhere.

 

Third, actually moving. They would still have to move for his son to be elligble as I'm sure you know. They have lived in Danville since the summer of '97 & I believe in the same house. Sometimes people get to a point in their lives where they just don't want to move again.

 

I mention all of this just because there are a lot more factors to taking this job than just, applying, interviewing and taking it. I said it above and I'll say it again, Jerry Perry, if all the above is suitable, should be the man for the job. He began his head coaching career there, doing an unbelievable job and it would be poetic if able to finish. I also mention these things, so that some don't get upset if in fact they don't hire him/he accepts, etc. Many, many , many logistics that go into this (and, any other job for that fact).

 

Unfortunately (or fortunately), it's not like college coaches. High school coaches usually don't move around for the money...b/c the fact is, there just isn't that big of difference when it comes to probably 90% (or more) of the schools across the commonwealth. Momma still has to work, and if she teaches..you hope that there will be a job for her (unlike many college coaches who make high 5 and 6, 7 figures). You have to HOPE your house sells in time to avoid having two mortgages and/or a mortgage and a rent (which these days is about like a mortgage).

 

I can tell you this. I feel without any reservation whatsoever that the administration Garrard County, from top to bottom will make a great hire.

I also feel like the administration at Garrard County will make a great hire. I'm looking forward to seeing who gets it.

I don't expect this to be a supported comment, but I look at Garrard much like South Laurel. I have no idea why each of those jobs would be popular among great coaches. Good coaches or up-and-comers, yes. If the realignment goes like expected, Garrard would possibly be in a district with Boyle and Lex Cath. South Laurel is in a district with Pulaski, Southwestern, North Laurel, and Madison Southern. Who in their right mind would want to walk into that? Those jobs are just not appealing. The only thing on Garrard's side is that I expect Lex Cath to have a couple of down years coming up. I have a hard time believing Letton would have stepped away from that team (with his son, assuming he transfers if they move) if he thought they would compete at the same levels they are used to.

Believe it or not , their was a small group of people that wanted Sam Harp out. When he retired Jerry had no shot. The principal was completely overwhelmed with the entire ordeal and went to the path of least resistance. With that said, everything happens for a reason. Danville's loss will be someone else's gain.

I agree with all your points and I'm sure they don't go into the hiring process saying we are just going to hire someone to get it over with but I and alot of others have been very supportive.....even though it doesn't sound like it with my posts......of the school but I am at the end of my rope with some of those people in the school system and the way they do things. I keep telling myself it will get better and then something else crazy happens so at some point they need to look in the mirror as see what they need to change. I don't have all the answers but they could at least try something different. Just afraid they are scared to get out of their comfort zone.

 

Get ready....there will be backlash from some if Coach Perry doesn't get the job!

I hope they understand that him turning it down could be a possibility, too, and that those who could be angry can rationalize that.

 

In 1996, Bowling Green ended up hiring a guy named Kevin Wallace who had been the HC at Warren East & was about 20 games under .500. BG's top three choices fell through. The rest is history.

 

Who would have ever thought that a HC with a well below .500 record would have taken a Corvette and turned it into a Mazarati?

Listen, when I played for GCHS, we pounded Boyle fairly regularly. There's nothing in the water there or nothing written in stone that says they can't be beaten. Historically, their success has been recent, before that, they were average at best. It's no secret what Boyle has been doing, weight lifting, improving facilities, making sure the younger kids are participating, good coaching, etc. If everybody took the attitude that certain schools couldn't be beaten, I guess Ft. Thomas Highlands would have been a state champion this year, but apparently Collins must have not got that memo. Ditto for Pulaski County & Wayne County, who made first time appearances in state championship games.
