Contrast this to the 14 total free throws attempted in the "physical" Big Ten contest between Indiana and Wisconsin. Something seems amiss with referees' interpretations of what is and is not a foul.

 

UK had too many stupid turnovers at critical times. They still sorely lack defensive intensity. WCS was nowhere to be found. It's getting to the point where it's hard to watch UK sometimes---with all the bad play.

You obviously didn't watch the same game I did. Arkansas got hosed on several calls as well. Poor effort and poor execution by the officials.

 

You must have misunderstood what I posted. Obviously the officials sucked last night but my post was more about a lot of UK fans blaming the refs and not their play. It also was in reference to the game at Rupp in which UK got some pretty sketchy calls in their favor but UK fans were pretty tight lipped about those.

The foul total was 31 on UK and 29 on Arkansas.

 

UK has been called for 30+ fouls twice this season. At UNC and last night at Arkansas.

 

Coming in to the night, they were averaging 18.2 fouls per game. So they were called for 13 more fouls than normal.

 

As for Arkansas getting "just as many" fouls called on them. UK has only been called for more fouls than their opponent twice. At UNC and at Arkansas.

 

Coming into the night, UK's opponents were being called for 6.6 more fouls per game than UK.

 

Calling the game fairly doesn't mean both teams end up with the same number of fouls at the end of the night.

 

Kentucky's style of play is always (usually) going to generate more fouls on their opponents than they commit.

I'm kinda surprised at the outcome. I always figured that any day Richie Farmer got 27 that the Cats would win.

I wasn't picking on you saying even, but it was really a 2 foul difference. I was saying that just because both teams end up with a similar number of fouls, doesn't mean it was fairly called.

 

UK plays a style of offense that draws a lot of fouls (top 10 in the country), and doesn't play a super aggressive style of D.

 

Arkansas on the other hand, took a lot of 3s, and played very aggressive D.

 

When you consider those facts, and then see that UK was still called for more fouls, it seems obvious that it wasn't "fairly" called.

 

And yes, Kentucky could have/should have one that game despite the poor officiating. However, if you think the officials weren't being influenced by the atmosphere and calling it more in Arkansas' favor, we'll just have to disagree.

 

Also take a look at Cal's record when Ayers is on the officiating crew.

Scott van Pelt was talking about this game today on the radio. He said twitter was blowing up during the game with fans from both teams claiming they weren't getting hosed by the officials. My only real gripe about the officials was they let too much go under the basket. Yes, I said it ... there should have been more fouls called.

What wasn’t one of my favorite games of the season was Tuesday’s showdown between Kentucky and Arkansas. As great as the end of regulation and all of overtime was, the first 38 minutes were unbearable, primarily because it might have been the worst-officiated game I’ve ever seen. Sixty fouls were called on the night, there were a handful of reviews that took forever to resolve, and the refs blew several other calls (particularly awful were the over-and-back call on Andrew Harrison and Julius Randle getting away with hitting a defender in the face with both elbows). I’m not sure how anyone who’s not a Kentucky or Arkansas fan could sit through the nearly three hours of that game.

 

A simplistic approach would be to bump Kentucky out of the most powerful power rankings in college basketball because it lost to an unranked team. But the correct approach is to acknowledge that Arkansas was desperate for a win, Bud Walton Arena is a tough place to play, and the officiating travesty resulted in a game that resembled sarcastaball more than it did basketball. I don’t want to take anything away from the Hogs, and Kentucky certainly needs to improve (getting the whole team mentally engaged would be a great start), but Tuesday was the kind of game for which John Calipari should just throw the film away and move on to the next one. Despite the loss, Kentucky is playing pretty well right now, and if the NCAA tournament started tomorrow, you’d be out of your mind to think that 12 teams would have a better shot at winning it all than the Cats.

Outside of Poythress, I've seen nothing that indicates this team has made the slightest of improvements.

Are you kidding or just being fececious? Their defense has improved 100%. Their half court offense has improved although not as much as we would all like. But to say they haven't made the slightest improvement is just an ignorant, stupid statement.
