Nate McCoy from Gallatin Co. deserved at least honorable mention. I know GC's strength of schedule is not the best but Nate had an outstanding year leading his team to a record of 10-3, District Championship, and a regional runner up to NCC. He led the state with 14 INTs, had 70 tackles, recovered 4 fumbles, forced 2 fumbles on defense. Offensively, he had 53 catches for 1200 yds, 14 TDs rec., rushed for over 400 yds with 6 rushing TDs. He also returned 2 kickoffs for TDs and 2 punts for TDs. How many votes do you have to have to get Honorable Mention?

Not only that, but there are two first team guys from Warren Central and one each from John Hardin and Paducah Tilghman I believe. All three of which were defeated by the Birds.

 

I agree with many on here that NKY pretty much got hosed on these selections and not just from a Highlands perspective.

I don't think team wins should have any part of this.

With that said, I agree with you that NKY had a lot of talented players left off. That is actually expected though if you follow any of these awards each and every year.

 

Don't read into these awards as anything other than the usual and that is the voters don't actually know the best in the state when they nominate. So don't even look at stats, they don't come into account on lists like this.

This is definitely true...but some coaches also push their favorites over the more deserving players on their team. How the players do in college (if they even will end up playing college ball) when they no longer have these HS coaches pushing them will be the tell tale.

 

BTW...do all of the players on the first three teams have D1 offers? If not...shouldn't they? I know some in the honorable mention category do.

Happy for RJ Taylor 3rd Team DB and Jake Ryan Honorable Mention P both from Tates Creek. Great young men and very deserving. I could have Seen RJ as a 2nd team WR or 1/2nd team DB. Just an honor to be mentioned in these types of lists.

Glad to see Simon Kenton's Ben Walling get 3rd team. Kuntz and Hansen got honorable mention.

Again, not specifically talking about this kid. Why is the kid from Johnson Central on the 2nd team and why is the kid from Paintsville Honorable Mention?

 

The kid with 89 extra points did not even garner honorable mention and that is the 5th highest total of all time per the KHSAA record book. Enough said.

Brett Seymore from Caldwell County had 83 straight EXPs and also kicked a 51 yd FG, and a few from beyond 40. I am just happy he got mentioned, and I am sure he is too.
