I hate to break it to you, but stats are not the end all be all.

How do you know he has a leg?

 

57-yarder tells me has "a leg."

How do you know he has a leg? Basing that on 13 field goals. Does he kickoff as well? If so, what was the percentage of touchbacks? There is more to a kicker than just how many field goals he made.

 

No one has tried to answer the question of where those 5 kickers that I posted ended up on the C-J all state teams. Not trying to bash on anyone here, just curious what others thoughts are considering these stats were easy to find.

 

Because he is going to Ohio State. Doubt they would want a kid from KY if he couldn't kick.

How many coaches that actually voted have seen the players play? Rememer: they teach school, they grade papers, they coach football 6 days a week, they hopefully have some sort of down time.

 

So we expect these guys to know who is better at each position? It's unrealistic. Lots of talented players on the list. Congrats to them.

 

To a lesser extent the same issue exists for Mr Football. How many writers have seen the top 4 play more than once?

My point is that because HHS played Elder tight or because HHS made the state championship I can't tell ANYTHING about an individual player. I have to see them. It's the very reason all-state awards/all-star awards always have to be understood that the voting is flawed.

 

The point I was trying to make in my previous post is that HHS seemed to accomplish a lot despite having no top-level talent, at least according to the CJ. That speaks very well of the HHS coaching staff, in my opinion, going 13-2 and finishing runner up.

I don't put any stock into who beat whom when it comes to individual awards.

Many times people get team accomplishments confused with individual performances.

 

The best player in the state CAN play for the worst team in the state, and the best team in the state may not have that many great players.

 

Barry Sanders did play for the Lions.

It's hard to say really who exactly should be on these teams. It's not like you can see all the players. If a big time college wants you then you might should be on the all state team somewhere.

 

Being a Mayfield guy, one player that I did not see anywhere was Kel Carmen , 6'3' 310 jr. He has a big motor and I was surprised he was not at least honorable mention C J .

How many kids play high school football in Kentucky? Just because a team doesn't have one of these 22 spots certainly doesn't mean they have "no top talent," regardless of the media outlet. I doubt anybody at the CJ would agree with that comment.

I would say the average was just average but he may kick the ball high and do some other things that you would just have to see in person to make a fair judgment.

No HHS player made any of the three teams, so that's 66 spots, not 22.

This is definitely true...but some coaches also push their favorites over the more deserving players on their team. How the players do in college (if they even will end up playing college ball) when they no longer have these HS coaches pushing them will be the tell tale.

Your last question gets to the debate of what you are looking at when you vote. College options? Strictly senior year stats? Intangibles?

 

Never going to be a good system. It's a challenge that simply isn't realistically going to be fixed.

How good they do in college down the road tells nothing about how good they are in high school this year. A 6'3" 240 lb 17 year old senior can turn into a 6'5" 300lb senior all American who goes on to be drafted in the first round of the NFL draft. None of this means he was a great, or even good high school player.

 

As to should you have a D-1 scholarship to be 1st team all state? Many years Kentucky couldn't fill a 24 man squad.
