OK, I grant you this. However, most bring up the PT/Mayfield/Wayne results and compare the score but I bring it up and you dont wanna compare the scores.

LOL. I don't like score comparisons either for lots of reasons. What does the final score from those two games with Williamsburg tell us? Blowouts take so many different forms, score alone is not a good indicator of anything.

The ole eyeball test sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. How Wayne County did against Belfry and visa versa might be totally different against Mayfield because of matchups and coaching, I'd take Mayfield's coaches over Wayne's just on experience and how they can do in a 1 game setting.

2. Collins - Best non-BG team in the state

3. Meade - Got robbed

4A. Scott - Robbery, but still a solid team

4B. Highlands - Phenomenal offense, absolutely horrible defense

6. DeSales - Great team

7. Mayfield - I think they'd beat everyone under them and probably lose to everyone over them

8A. Belfry - Shame we didn't get to see them play in better conditions

8B. Wayne - See above

10. Pulaski - Best JV-age team ever, they'll be a Collins'esqe force in the coming two years

11. NCC - Decent team, but not really on par with the company above IMO

12. Williamsburg - Congrats on getting there; that in itself is special

I'm just glad my team is on this list no matter where they would rank!

I would have a tough time ranking Mayfield ahead of Wayne County.

 

Wayne's defense was very stout, and they really demolished Tilghman in the semifinals, which was the only common opponent they shared with Mayfield.

 

I know, I know, comparing scores again, but just watching them both play, I stand by my statement.

 

Obviously, you didn't see Mayfields defense. I'd rank the Cards ahead of Wayne and Belfry. To much team speed for either and way better offense. Wayne had absolutely no running game unless you want to count the QB, who was slow as mud. Belfry had good size, but, they didn't have much speed either and were average, at best, thru the air. One dimentional teams like that aren't going to beat Mayfield, period. People think depth is an issue, but, Mayfield dresses 50-60 kids every year, which is more than most 2a and 3a teams. They have a few that goes both ways, but, so did Wayne and Belfry. Mayfields DL was there strength this year. They were excellent and very fast. I think they'd give a primary running team fits. I respect the heck out of what Belfrys done over the years, but, from what I saw, I really don't think they'd stand much of a chance against Mayfield. I really don't.

I respect your opinion and you may be right. Mayfield vs. Belfry or Wayne would be a very good game.

 

I'd like to see a round robin schedule with Belfry, Wayne, Pulaski, DeSales, NCC and Mayfield. Any matchup out of that group would be fun to watch.

Caldwell was one dimensional and they beat Mayfield.

 

What I saw from Mayfield was a defense that had good quickness but would have been very suspect against a good power running team because of their size and a couple guys who have to play both ways up front (as well as a couple key backups who play both ways as well). Mayfield's offense was not set up to effectively hurt Belfry where they were the most vulnerable as well... I like Mayfield's backs and the Freshman will be a stud in the next couple years but I simply would see Belfry manhandle Mayfield up front with their quickness and the backs to me didn't have enough raw athleticism that they would be able to hurt Belfry breaking tackles or getting the corner.

 

I love the WR Jackson and Guhy is a great HS QB... any success Mayfield would have against Belfry could have to come from those two offensively as Mayfield's best chance to beat Belfry would be to try and create enough havoc to get their offense off the field and then try to hit a couple deep balls for just enough points to win. Mayfield would not be able to sustain drives against Belfry and in a war of attrition the Cards would be at a decisive disadvantage against the much bigger/deeper Belfry team. From what I saw Belfry would handle Mayfield fairly easily in a normal setting, but there is no denying Mayfield is a very well coached, skilled team who is not afraid to step up to play better competition.

 

The fact we can even have this conversation is a testament to how good of a program Mayfield has because a 1A team rightfully shouldn't even be in this discussion normally.
