Caldwell was one dimensional and they beat Mayfield.

 

What I saw from Mayfield was a defense that had good quickness but would have been very suspect against a good power running team because of their size and a couple guys who have to play both ways up front (as well as a couple key backups who play both ways as well). Mayfield's offense was not set up to effectively hurt Belfry where they were the most vulnerable as well... I like Mayfield's backs and the Freshman will be a stud in the next couple years but I simply would see Belfry manhandle Mayfield up front with their quickness and the backs to me didn't have enough raw athleticism that they would be able to hurt Belfry breaking tackles or getting the corner.

 

I love the WR Jackson and Guhy is a great HS QB... any success Mayfield would have against Belfry could have to come from those two offensively as Mayfield's best chance to beat Belfry would be to try and create enough havoc to get their offense off the field and then try to hit a couple deep balls for just enough points to win. Mayfield would not be able to sustain drives against Belfry and in a war of attrition the Cards would be at a decisive disadvantage against the much bigger/deeper Belfry team. From what I saw Belfry would handle Mayfield fairly easily in a normal setting, but there is no denying Mayfield is a very well coached, skilled team who is not afraid to step up to play better competition.

 

The fact we can even have this conversation is a testament to how good of a program Mayfield has because a 1A team rightfully shouldn't even be in this discussion normally.

 

I'm just curious how Belfry would be able to score. There line is big, I'll give them that, but, they aren't fast and a few of those guys go both ways, too. Unless there passing game is much better than it showed friday, I think they'd struggle mightily. Belfry's Ol reminds me alot of Graves Co's, big, strong, but, would have trouble with speed. Mayfield put up 56 on those guys. They may break a couple and score 14 points, but, Mayfields passing game would dismantle the Belfry secondary. Jackson would get his, but, they have 3 or 4 other WRs that would get open and catch some balls. I could see 2-3 big strikes and a couple of long time consuming drives. While the Cardinals DL is smaller and quicker, Mayfield's OL is probably close to the same size as Belfry's and would hold up just fine. I would honestly call for a 28-14 type win for Mayfield. And this is no disrespect to Belfry, I just think Mayfield has the overall better team this year.

I think we are both seeing in through our own red colored glasses because I am seeing it 28-14 type of game in Belfry's favor. HAHA I respect the heck out of this Mayfield team as well... in fact over the past decade I have seen Mayfield teams that I think would have beat Belfry straight up..no questions asked

 

Mayfield's defense never really showed dominance against teams that were not as storng offensively as Belfry. Tilghman, Graves, Ft. Campbell, and Russellville all sustained success vs. Mayfield and none had the talent and Line Belfry had. Caldwell and McCracken lit Mayfield up.. they are a different style than Belfry completely, but at the same time it proves that the Cards were not a stone wall when they played against non-Class A teams.

 

Wayne had staggering offensive numbers and had those numbers against solid teams and Belfry shut them down... Bourbon had more speed than Mayfield on offense and at the very least equal skill guys and Belfry shut their offense down as well.

 

Wayne is the only team this year to keep Belfry in check offensively... I simply think you are underselling their defense was short and the effort they put forth (even then Belfry had two redzone fumbles as well which certainly helped). Belfry scores by grinding teams into submission and then waiting for that one blown assignment to pop the big play.

Hold up there. One dimensional? Obviously you didn't see Caldwell play or you would not have made such a statement. I believe they beat Mayfield by running the ball. Obviously, Caldwell is known as a passing team.

It was a jab at the poster who called Wayne Count one dimensional after Belfry shut their run game down.. much like Caldwell Wayne made their hay with a very good passing game but had over 2000 rushing yards.

 

Essentially I was comparing Wayne's offense to Caldwell's.

 

It's easy to call a team one dimensional right after a great defense shuts it down, but the stats paint a different picture.

Anyone that ranks Collins ahead of Meade Co. needs to look at their matchup with 6A Central Hardin. They lost 36-32. Meade County absolutely destroyed Central Hardin. TWICE! They put the old "running clock" on them. TWICE!

 

Yes Collins lost to Central Hardin 36-32 but in that game Collins lost their best athlete, Dre Farris in the first quarter to an injury. Even with that, Collins had the ball on CH's 19 yard line with 1 second left and had a chance to win it, but couldn't complete a pass in the end zone. No excuse, just saying.

Mayfield is a GREAT PROGRAM...let me repeat they are a GREAT PROGRAM...but dismissing Belfry, Wayne and Pulaski just shows that some of you are living on past success and not this current team. Most Mayfield fans were admitting all season that this was one of their weaker teams over the last few years and now that they blew out the weakest opponent they've met in the finals they suddenly think that this team is world beaters like some in the past.

I don't think we're world beaters and neither do the fans that really know this team. This team could score on anybody, the defense was not what we have been used too. The defense got much better in the playoffs. Coaching and game preperation in my mind would be more in our favor against some of these teams. Mayfield over the years has beaten more teams that were more talented than they should have, than just about anybody.

No one ever said this was Mayfields worse team in the past 5 years, what was said was this team didn't have as much overall talent & speed, but, this team also played the toughest schedule and all they did was win, so, not sure this TEAM wasn't as good as those others. With the exception of maybe 4 teams in the final 12, in a 1 game "for all the marbles" scenario, my money would be on Mayfield. Maybe I lose money, maybe I make money, but that's where my money would be. When you look at the overall picture with talent, coaching, experience in the big games, game tested against bigger schools, pride the kids play with, discipline,...it all matters.

 

Football is a numbers game...I think most of us understand that. But Mayfield dresses as many or more kids than several 3, 4 and 5A schools. That's impressive for a 1A school. As a comparison, they dress about as many as Anderson Co does if the numbers I have seen are correct...and Anderson Co I think most would agree is a pretty good 5A program.

 

I'm no Mayfield supporter or big fan...I just think over the years they have proven to be "more" than the typical good 1A school. Yeah they have been beat, they will be beat again just like everyone else. But they get it done much much more than not.

I agree they have a great program, it's just this season I think they are a little lower than in some of the past seasons and that teams like Wayne and Belfry are being too easily dismissed for what ever reason.

I don't look at it as dismissing the other programs like Belfry and Wayne, but rather extoling what Mayfield did. Belfry has a very good program that overall rivals Mayfield. Wayne is the upstart but had a very good team this year. Saying Mayfield may be better than these two teams is not dismissing them in the least.
