Good point on the schools not wanting to be used as a stepping stone. Didn't know that Cox applied for the Dunbar job, but I'd imagine there could have been some financial and/or philosophical differences if he wasn't asked or didn't take the job.

 

As for his hiring, Rhodes' name was bounced around in connection with a few jobs Harlan Independent & Owsley County gave him some serious consideration. *(Tipton article). At the time, it seemed like there were a few more as well.

 

He contacted Owsley County about their opening at the time but I don't think he was interviewed. I think he either called or sent an email. I don't think the Owsley officials seriously considered him. I believe the thinking at the time was that he'd be a one year stay and then move on to another job and they were looking for coaching stability.

Now, with that said, I would defend the kids at PCC and KCC just as much, but I think that understanding this would explain why I think it's somewhat one-sided when the only threads that are popping up are on Cordia (with the exception of the Justin Johnson ones last year, but I felt those came up when the situation became public).

The article was after quite a few posts, including some as far back as last year. Thanks for the compliment on the article though if it is something that gave readers more insight. In hindsight, I probably should have mentioned the number of other transfers in the 14th Region more explicitly.

 

I will say that based on what I know at this point in time, I'm not really bothered by what's going on at Cordia. I've never shadowed the players for a day or anything like that, but if they're being taken care of in the dorms, going to class, and playing basketball, I'm fine with it. If that isn't the case, then I'd feel differently, but don't know anything to the contrary, so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

The Moeves's moving was not an easy decision for the family. BGP has not been very kind to them. They are a great family and the boys are wonderful kids. They all have adjusted very well. Don't we all think it's time to put it to rest and let the boys enjoy their high school days? These are real people we are talking about. A real family with real experiences. Let it be!

Why should race matter? The only thing that should be stated is a good athlete transferred.

With that being said IF the transfer aren't legitimate NONE of these players should be eligible. That's the rub most people on here have. It ISN'T just Cordia. Any school should be invistigated if they have illegal transfers. The thing with Cordia is the NUMBER of kids they have brought in and WHERE they have come from that jumps out at people.

What I get from some folks, however, is that the PCC and KCC examples are somehow less heinous because fewer players were involved, or that it would be OK if Cordia didn't have so many.

Yea… some schools have all the luck and just happen to have 3 starting (quality) players transfer in during a two year period.

Well, it's taken quite a few posts in this thread but Jim has finally hit the nail square on the head.

If Rhodes were at Oneida Baptist and these players were transferring in to their dorms there wouldn't be one word said right now. A sizeable portion of OBI's students are transfers that live in dorms. They've had some good basketball teams in the past but never enough to overcome Clay County and the other 13th region usual powers.

I don't know if it was said or not but I remember years ago a teacher at Clay County said that Clay County coach Bobby Keith once said that if he had coached at OBI that he would already have 2 or 3 state titles, I suppose meaning that he would fill those dorms up with 6'8 students who happen to have some basketball talent as well as a quest for finding Jesus. OBI had and still has the perfect situation to do that and it being as legal as can be.

Rhodes wouldn't be finding himself at the center of all this controversy if he'd been fortunate enough to have had an opening at OBI. Of course, that is a private school. I believe Cordia started out years ago as a private school but was eventually adsorbed into the Knott County system.
