He said Mariano Rivera liked to ride his fastball into righthanded hitters which could cause a bloop hit, which is EXACTLY what happened.

He said Mariano Rivera liked to ride his fastball into righthanded hitters which could cause a bloop hit, which is EXACTLY what happened. Good job guys. McCarver questioned the Yankees playing their infield in. He said that would be the usual strategy with the bases loaded and one out, but with Rivera's cutter he gets a lot of broken bat bloops and softly hit balls and said he would not play the infield in. It may have been the very pitch that Gonzales' hit barely blooped over the infield dirt. If the infield had been back, Jeter would have easily caught the ball. I always thought McCarver did a solid job and am not really sure why people don't like him.
October 31, 201312 yr Aside from the Deion incident, I've never understood why people have so much hate for him. I'm a little partial to McCarver as growing up in the Mid-Atlantic states and being a Phillies fan. I remember him being Steve Carlton's personal catcher late in his career, and him being resigned by the Phillies in September of 1980 so he could play in his fourth decade. He got his broadcasting start doing Phillies games with Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn (the Phillies version of Marty and Nuxhall....except better ). Always liked him.

November 1, 201312 yr Tom Brennaman replace him in the Fox Booth? Please, God, no. He is the consummate lightweight. I think McCarver is a prety good guy but only avreage at best in the booth.

November 1, 201312 yr Sooooo.....it's just me. nope, I'm with you Me too. I am not saying I am a fan of his but I thought he was solid.
