While this might be true, the fact of the matter is, it's never been done until last night. Like I said before, it takes a real unique series of events for this to even be attempted. A lot of things have to come together perfectly at the right time to even try it. If it were so easy/commonplace, it would happen a lot more often in the NFL or college, where kickers legs are stronger and even more accurate. And while a few kids across the state could probably physically do this, to be able to do it under game conditions, for a state record, with everyone watching, is probably easier said than done.

 

I agree with all that. I applaud the young man for his accomplishment and I hope he gets a chance to set the record with an actual field goal attempt.

If I understand correctly this can only be done after a fair catch on a punt? If that is the case then no it wouldn't be more if a commonplace. Unless your obsessed with some stupid record then why would you fair catch a ball just to try and kick a FG, unless that was all time would allow and you need it the points to tie or win.

I blame the other teams punter for kicking it to where he did. I can't believe no one on here is blaming Matney for working with the other team on this one! For the record I believe it's great for the kid but not the same as a regular field goal.

What was the game situation when this 60-yard free kick was taken? Score? Time? Was it at the end of the first half and they were just trying to get points before the clock ran out or what?

I don't agree with Matney's antics but the free kick is clearly defined as a Field Goal by KHSAA rules and it was a very smart idea by the coaching staff to use the rule. No joke about it.

 

Just because other Head Coaches have never had the foresight to use this rule to attempt longer Field Goals is no reason to think it shouldn't count as a record.

 

You can pick apart some of the things JC and Matney have did before, but in the case of this I think it is actually a display of very, very smart coaching. Not only did he get his kid the record, but he just single handily added a whole new aspect to concern when teams like Highlands and CovCath have to game plan for JC because any punt deep in their own territory could easily and immediately turn into 3 points for JC. It could also drastically impact end game scenarios in a tied or close game.

 

Knowing now JC can essentially score 3 points instantly... you have the ball leading by 2 points with 3:00 to go at your own 15... it is impossible not have this in the back of your mind as you play offense and now instead of simply running the ball and eating clock you may have to attack more aggressively. It also means instead of drilling a punt and pushing them back as far as possible, you now may have to consider kicking it out of bounds or on a line drive and thus risking the chance of adversely effecting field position.

What you're telling me is Matney made one ignorant move. In a 51 point blowout game in order to get some glory he showed a move that might do him some good come playoffs. I can see why he's never had any success when crunch time hits.

Your post really does not make sense.

 

He has had success in crunch time.. he just hasn't been able to beat Highlands in the playoffs. If that defines "not having success" in crunch time then no other Head Coach in 4A, including Boyle County, LexCath, and any team in the Western Semi-State has had any success as well.

 

I specifically said I don't agree with his antics...specifically some of the stuff he did with Jude and some of the scheduling he has done. But to consider him a "joke" when it can be argued that JC has consistently been the second best team behind Highlands in their class, simply because he got his kid a record as defined by the KHSAA rules is very short sighted and frankly nothing more than a knee jerk reaction.
