My point with this is that Highlands is probably thinking that it is more convenient from a travel standpoint to play an Elder than to play Trinity.

The argument that Highlands dodges Trinity during the regular season in order to avoid being labeled second fiddle to Trinity is puzzling to me. From 2010 until this year, Highlands has scrimmaged Trinity, and in all but one of those years (2010) Trinity handled Highlands pretty convincingly. If Highlands was so concerned about the appearance of playing runner-up to Trinity, then wouldn't it make more sense for Highlands to avoid any kind of game or competition with Trinity, in order to avoid the head-to-head comparison?

 

As others have written, Highlands plays a top-tier Cincinnati school almost every year, and Highlands is almost always the underdog in these games. Given how impressive Trinity has been in the recent past (heck, they won the MNC two years ago), wouldn't it "look better" for Highlands to play and probably lose against Trinity during the regular season, than to play and probably lose against a program like Elder???

 

 

It might make some BGP folks and Highlands Haters happy but it is much cheaper to play Elder than T at home and at the Pit and still get a top notch quality game.

 

So in reality it is a "no brainer" for Dale when chosing which team to play imo.

 

Besides, I didnt get back to Dale in time for the T game decision this yr but I did for the Elder game...LOL

I saw a Dr today about an ingrown toenail.

Can we leave the discussion here to Trinity and Highlands playing?

 

If Bowling Green played Trinity this year instead of St. X and St. X beats Trinity, we'd probably be having the same conversation about "why Bowling Green wouldn't play St. Xavier to see who the best team in the state is".

I think it'd be great for Kentucky High School Football to see Trinity and Highlands square off each year. Louisville versus Northern Kentucky. Hold it at Papa John's one year and try to get a venue like Nippert or Paul Brown Stadium (as part of a Shoot-Out type deal where there were other games that day/weekend to help with costs) when it was Highland's turn to host.

 

With that said, I think it's a very good point that if Trinity is going to travel to Northern Kentucky to play anyway, they might as well go across the river and take on an Elder, Moeller, or someone else. The fact of it is, on the national scene, that win would mean more to Trinity than a win over Highlands would. Trinity is a bigger school, so they'd be expected to beat Highlands. They have everything to lose and nothing to gain by playing from my perspective.

 

I can understand why Highlands would want to play, but I can understand why Trinity wouldn't want to.

While X is a proven big dog, they have played 2nd fiddle to Trinity for quite some time now, furthermore everyone knows the road to #1 in the state goes through Trinity. So if you think your team is the best in the state then you definitly need to step up & schedule Trinity. As I have said so many times before this can be settled on the field by Trinity,X,Highlands,BG & Scott co. playing annaully. Here's what I do know is that Trinity & St X will play any top team. So Highlands Bowling Green & Scott co need to step up to the plate & do the same!!!

Paducah wasn't real convenient, yet HHS figured out how to make that work to get a game scheduled.

So when I say that IF Bowling Green had played Trinity this year in place of the Bowling Green-St. Xavier game, Bowling Green beats Trinity, then St. Xavier beats Trinity (just like I did in the hypothetical that I presented and you quoted), Trinity is still better?

I don't know. It seems nice to me that a fan from a team over 300 miles away in a different class cares enough to start a thread about your team and not about the local power in their part of the state (BG). I mean it is not like anybody from NKY (or elsewhere) would ever start a "Why doesn't Mayfield play Trinity (or BG or Highlands, etc.) thread?" If so, I expect the Mayfield answer would be similar to Highlands--we play many other good teams whose schedules we can arrange with ours, almost all of which are schools much larger than our school which has been quite successful in preparing our team to win state championships (9 for Mayfield, 22 for Highlands), so why do you ask (instead of checking the archives for the multiple year annual threads on this topic referenced by LN). In other words the BGP obsession for Highlands football is both internal and external. It is not happenstance that Guru starts a Highlands-related JV game cancellation thread that generates more posts and views than any Mayfield or Kenton varsity game. Also, check the number of MHS and Kfan posts on Highlands threads versus Highlands fans posts on Mayfield and Kenton threads. So again, it is nice that people care enough to ask even when that love/hate interest is largely unreciprocated with respect to their teams.

Just play Trinity and this thread is settled. I am sure the Rocks will play.

Maybe it's just the fact that both teams claim other teams are afraid to play them and the fact that Trinity has had years with only 9 games and Highlands has had years where they've had to schedule a team twice just to complete the schedule. It just appears to me a natural solution for there scheduling problems. I'm a HS football fan, period and would love to see 2 of the best the state has to offer play each other. As far as Mayfield goes, they don't have any scheduling probs or needs to drive 5 plus hours to find games. It was a legitimate question. Don't give yourself so much credit.

And we all know that Paducah is just around the corner. John Hardin must be closer to Ft. Thomas than I realized.

Dale wants to be undefeated every year and will set up his schedule so that is possible. They could play 4 or 5 GCL teams a year too but that wont happen.

The primary goal is to beat Covington Cath and win a 4A state title. The stretch goal is to be undefeated and national ranking.
