Or he could have just hit him again since Gomez is batting almost .500 against him. It's obvious when Maholm isn't throwing at Gomez to hit him then Gomez is lighting up his pitching. I'm trying to figure out how any sane person wouldn't treat Maholm the same way.

Nah, I think the best thing is strike Gomez out and then act the way I described above. Maholm has struck out Gomez more times than Gomez has hit HR's off him.
