If USA Today has Joey Votto 5th in the NL MVP race tracker.....

Latos definitely was the most valuable pitcher the Reds have had this year, but I think some love should be given to Mike Leake. He's proved so many people wrong this season.

If you buy that Votto's lack of RBI production is due to not having opportunities................then I guess instead of the 70-80 RBIs he is headed for this year we should expect about 60-65 next year if the Reds let Choo walk away.

All I need to know is in a lineup simulator, over the course of a season, a lineup of Brandon Phillips creates about 4.2 runs per game. A lineup of Votto's creates 7.2 runs per game. Is Phillips defense worth 3 runs PER GAME over Votto? Nope. Who's more valuable?

Money.

About like MVottoP last night with the game on the line in the 9th. Outstanding.

BP 7 for his last 34 with RISP. Is that good???

Did you use your Xbox to figure that out you stat head?

There is a fantastic chance that BP regresses back towards his regular average with RISP but don't tell that to anyone taking the eye test.

7 for 34 isn't a regression Abner Doubleday?

Tell the other side of the tale Sam, what were his numbers before.

What are Votto's numbers recently? You always need to look comparatively at stats to find their true meaning and/or value. I would like to see them side by side. When I look at their overall production numbers (runs, hits, RBI, HR) since the All Star break, they are almost identical.

The other thing I will say about this whole debate, MVP for me is often about people doing more than expected. For me, Votto has done less than I expected this year and Phillips has done more.

Yo Abner do you know what regression means?

There’s a Reds version of the great debate about traditional stats versus Sabermetrics that arose during the American League MVP race last season.

Ask a traditional stats person who the Reds MVP is, and they will undoubtedly say Brandon Phillips.

Saber folks will say Joey Votto.

Beating your head against the wall is a more productive exercise than trying to convince one side the other side is right.

Disagree. I consider Votto clearly their best player but if BP hits .350+ with RISP while hitting .260 or so I'd name him team MVP this year only. I just would think it was purely luck and that he won't match it next year.

See, it wasn't so hard to say was it?
