If USA Today has Joey Votto 5th in the NL MVP race tracker.....

Featured Replies

I am with spindoc. Phillips is this year's MVP. Moving into the 4 hole and producing plus his defense. I am not saying he is the best hitter on the team or best run producer but he is the Reds' MVP IMO. Votto is still the man but Phillips is 2013 MVP.

On the pitching side, Latos. End of discussion.

Outside of those 3, the only other person I would even think about considering is Choo. He has been such a big factor at leadoff and that sets the whole lineup.

^Overall, statistically, Phillips is having the most average season in baseball (according to the WSJ).

Still the Reds MVP. Numbers are not the whole story.

Couldn't possibly disagree more.

He's not in the top 3.

He should be driving in runs with as many chances as he gets. Hell UKMF would have 50 RBIs hitting in that spot this year. You could actually argue he hasn't done enough with the number of guys Bruce has had in scoring position when he bats behind BP. All BP has had to do is not strike out and he drives in runs by default.

Baseball is the ultimate numbers game and Votto dominates the numbers to put the Reds offense in advantageous situations. He's the clear MVP on the offensive side and it isn't close...

Dang right I could!

I didn't expect you to agree with me on anything baseball.

Consideration? Sure. Kershaw is running away with it though...

I know Kershaw has it hands down, but it's nice to know that we have a guy that could be in the consideration.

Choo is second in the league with on base % in the league so he has guys on base.

Hi at bats with runners in scoring position prove that hasn't been a huge help when your #2 hitter is the worst in baseball.

OBP % from 2 hole - Worst in baseball

OPS- 26 out of 30

Phillips has RBI because he is batting .362 with runners in scoring position, far and away the best on the team. He has been clutch all year. He got thrown into the middle of the order and has done what a 4 hitter should do - drive in runs and it isn't just because of opportunties. He is making it happen. He has been having great at bats all year. He is batting .289 when he has two strikes on him, also by far the best on the team. You guys are not giving him his due credit. I can see a legit argument for Votto. But to say Phillips isn't even close to being MVP is wrong.

I'd have to agree with all this. Phillips has done a great job in his role but Votto is still the man that makes everything happen for the Reds. He's still the MVP in my eyes.

Give Votto the same number of ABs as Phillips with RISP and he'd have just as many RBI. Phillips has a mediocre OBP, a poor OPS, a low WAR, an average BA....Whether you choose to use them or not, those are important measures in determining a player's worth and value. Votto and Choo are simply more valuable, no two ways around it.

If Votto had the same number of AB's with RISP, he would have 16 fewer RBI than Phillips. That is based on Votto's production this year with RISP.

114th, 99th, 110th, and 146th.....Those are BP's ranks in OBP, Slugging, OPS, and WAR respectively. M-V-P....:lol2:

Keep your head in your stats hole and pay attention to the numbers that you like. Ignore any numbers that don't prove your point. And please don't watch a game because if you see what happens with your own eyes, you might not like it. I love sabermetrics as much as anyone and do consider those numbers, but like any statistics you have to look at all the numbers plus pay attention to more than just the numbers.

For me, MVP isn't just about numbers. Chemistry, intangibles and what goes on between the ears every night are huge in baseball. I think what Phillips has brought to the team this year has been a major reason for their success.
