If USA Today has Joey Votto 5th in the NL MVP race tracker.....

Featured Replies

....and they do.

5. Joey Votto, Reds: Cincinnati's slugging first baseman is batting .358 over the last 15 games despite being the hitter NL teams most like to avoid. He leads the league in walks (89) and on-base percentage (.433).

Why do most Reds fans have him about 5th in the MVP race on his own team? Are we missing something?

Reds MVP:

1. Phillips

2. Latos

3. Bruce

4. Chapman

5. Lecure

6. Votto?????

Votto has been solid this year. He went through the end of June into July doing very little which fans got on him for. After that 3 week stretch he's pretty much back offensively where I'd expect him to be. Defensively he's been a total disaster this year

I am not saying Votto is terrible but 59 RBIs out of your #3 hitter with over 110 Ks this deep in the season cannot make him the # 5 candidate in the NL.

Is he supposed to drive in base runners that don't exist???

I think I read he is 4th in the NL in runs produced.

Cmon GT. Maybe the 2 hole has been a semi-disaster but Choo at the top has been on base more than any lead-off hitter the Reds had in Votto's tenure. Bottom line Votto is a high average hitter abd On-base guy with some power but he is not a very good # 3 hitter on a playoff team. Maybe he needs to be elsewhere in the line-up? Or maybe he is the best # 3 hitter the Reds can muster. But no-way no-how is he the #5 NL MVP candidate.

He spoiled us with his past seasons but, again, he is 4th in runs produced. Slice it up all anyone wants but producing runs is the name of the game.

I don't know where I'd rank him with the Reds, but a player you've got to give some props to is Cingrani. I can't imagine any other staff losing their #1 guy for the amount of time the Reds have, and be able to replace him with the quality that they've received from Cingrani. I really don't think they've missed a beat.

Votto is middle of the pack in the NL in at bats with RISP. 2 guys in the top 5 hit behind him. Wonder how that happens...

Mmm. Check the stats of the #3 hitters for Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and St Louis. Votto takes a back seat to none of those.

Votto is #1 in the NL in runs created. 5 ahead of Goldschmidt.

Thanks for the correction. I thought I heard 4th in the NL. It's actually 4th in MLB. Only Miggy, Trout, and Davis are in front of him.

Votto and Latos are the team MVP's and it's not close.

It amazes me we debate this. Votto is the MVP on this team without a doubt in my mind. He is just not pitched to very much. I daggone guarantee any GM in the league if they could have any player off the Reds roster, Votto would be the guy in the vast majority of selections. He is definitely in top 5 of all players in MLB. The only player clearly better is Miggy.

Votto is tied for 21st in the NL in at bats with runners in scoring position. (Tied with Cozart with 106)

Phillips and Bruce both have 137 which is good for 2nd in the NL. It's no surprise they have more RBIs than him.
