(MoneyWatch) -- Fast-food workers in seven cities across the nation walked off the job Monday in protests over low wages. The employees, many of whom are paid the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, are demanding $15 an hour, while many say they also want union representation.

I know people who work legitimate desk jobs that don't make $15 an hour.

for a job that requires no skill and a very low level of stress. no way.

 

i get wanting a livable wage, but there's opportunity for promotion, or you need to learn a skill.

 

 

as an aside, in college i worked at Chipotle, and was (by everyone else's admission) the only person in the country legally. all of my friends there (from guatemala, mexico and the DR) worked first/second shift at Chipotle then an entirely different job somewhere else, EVERY DAY. I was the only person not working 16 hours every day to provide for my family (thanks mom and dad!) i'm not suggesting that is a good, or healthy lifestyle, but none of them complained, they just assumed it was normal every day life to work that much to afford to live. interesting differences between the two...

I originally saw the article on Facebook. Several people were talking about how hard fast food workers have it and what not. I was laughing reading some of the posts they were so ridiculous. Nothing about ANY fast food job (outside of management) is worth of that type of pay.

I think very few people look at FF as a career path. The majority of workers are HS and college age people, in most cases this is their first time in the job market. Not seeing this job being worth $15 per hour.

My second thought on this was, who actually goes to a McDonald's or Wendy's expecting to make that kind of money? I assumed it was understood that you made minimal wages working in fast food.

Try to avoid eating at FF joints as it is...you ask me to pay $9.45 for a Big Mac or a Whopper to accommodate those wages, no way am I a customer.

Could be a negotiating tactic. Their end game may be to get 10 but you don't ask or demand 10. You have to ask for higher. Saying they want 15 bucks and hour and adding the threat of unionizing might work in another industry. The easiest employees to replace are fast food workers. I think these folks got some bad advice.

Yep. Even if $10 was the goal, $15 was way too high to start, now they've shot themselves in the foot. You could walk less than a mile down Dixie Highway right now and find enough people to fill a McDonald's again.

They knew what the job paid when they took it. If they want a job making $15 an hour go find one. I'd fire everyone of them.

I think our administration and the people around it are fanning this furor to gain support for a higher minimum wage. IMO the way to a higher wage, as posted above, it to take advantage of our educational opportunities (finish high school!!), then better yourself. To continue to increase people's wages without increased productivity is the sure way to either 1) inflate prices where they can be; or 2) kill a business. It is that simple.

Most McDonald's jobs pay at least $8.25 an hour.

If they want $15 an hour they need to get a different job.

They knew what the job paid when they took it. If they want a job making $15 an hour go find one. I'd fire everyone of them.

 

Not saying I agree with this but many people say the same thing when the idea of teachers' low pay comes up.
