How do the poor inner-city but great football players get into T????

 

I actually addressed something like this in one of the approximately 50 other threads that seemed to pop up in the last 48 hours. If the player I mentioned couldn't get a full ride, no one can.

If public schools separated themselves into all male and all female schools, then at least the male athlete pool would be close to the 1600 T carries.

 

Where in the world do people come up with these enrollment numbers???? I doubt Trinity has the capacity to handle that many kids. I can't wait till the post is made that states Trinity's enrollment is 2,000.

The funds they split each year should answer that question! The last time St X tried not to face Trinity, the Archbishop of Louisville stepped in. Of course, that was 1956 and St. X won 48-0. The series was on despite the beat down.

 

 

I have never heard about this. Do you have any of the details behind what reason X did not want to play and how Archbishop Floerish got involved? Actually, the Xavieran Brothers supposedly were a huge head ache for Archbishop Floerish so the fact he forced them to play Trinity, a school he directed the founding of, really doesn't surprise me. In order not to thread jack, PM is fine.

Well, first they take the placement exam. Then, like most Trinity families, they apply for financial aid. Then, on the off-chance they qualify for the maximum (1/2 of the tuition is the max), the family then begins budgeting for the rest. One or both parents may take on second or third jobs, they decide to put off buying a newer car, maybe eat hot dogs more often....Trust me....it can be done. It's not easy at all, but it's done by more families than just the athletes. You can't judge a family's willingness to find a way by where they live or what their savings account is or isn't.

 

This is from a woman who worked two (or was it three?) jobs to put her son through Trinity. Saying that, it can be done and is done often.

 

Also, to add a little. Rock Mom mentioned "the off-chance they qualify". Technically that is not chance, it is a very long and complex formula that Trinity has no part in calculating. PSAS (Private School Aid Service) is one of about a half dozen companies approved by the KHSAA to provide financial aid forms to applicants and to calculate the financial need of the applicant. The three main drivers behind the caluclation are 1) Total Household Income, 2) How many people live in that household (a household with 8 kids would need more aid than a household with one kid all other things being equal) and 3) The amount of tuition being paid for the other kids ie if a household had an older sister going to Assumption, an older sibling going to UK and two younger sibling going to Saint So and So, that would be a large amount of tuition being paid and that family would qualify for quite a bit of aid assuming their overall house hold income was not overly high.

 

Also, for a long time 1/2 of tuition was the max, I believe Trinity's endowment and overall fundraising has increased enough that it is more than half, not sure how much more.

That's just silly...the right coach is nice and all, but for anyone who's actually coached in KY for awhile, the truth is well known...it takes the right ADMINISTRATION to win on a consistent basis.

 

Dale is at Highlands, KY's clear #2 program (sorry X, but it is what it is) and he scrimmages T every year, and gets beat every year (routed and run out of the stadium occasionally). Dale isn't throwing any passes, running the ball, making any blocks, or tackling anyone...he's a coach. It's about the Jimmy's and Joe's, not the X's and O's...and that's from a coach named Bobby Bowden.

 

Everyone knows why nobody wants to play T; because they're too good right now. To everyone outside of their fan base, they're annoying and have pretty much ruined large-school football in KY. They're the Wal-Mart of KYFB, too big, too powerful, and too good at what they do.

For all that Highlands has going for it, it is still a 400 boy school. Think of it this way. If Highlands were 3x its current size, could Highlands beat Trinity?

I was going from memory and in fact 1300 for 11/12 is the correct enrollment number from Trinity. There are even several Lexington and Louisville area schools that come close to this enrollment, but here in NKy , SK has the largest with 875 and the others are much smaller.

Football is scheme and personnel, sure Dale could draw up a scheme to play with Trinity at Ryle but you have to have the personnel to do it. Fact remains small communities in KY cannot play with greater Louisville. Simply not enough athletes to go around in a weak football state.

No closed enrollment program is going to have any shot at all competing with a program whose entire athlete population is open enrollment. I don't care who is coaching.

Hmm, makes me wonder? Scott County gets blown out in Ft. Thomas, then plays Trinity down to the final few minutes in the state game. So, was Trinity really that much better than the Birds? Did Scott County improve that much in so little time, I don't think so. The haters can call it what they want, but T blowing H out in the scrimmage was just Dale doing his thing.( It seems to be working.) :popcorn:

Again, Dale is a Great Coach. He & Coach Beatty are hands down the 2 best H.S. football coaches in ky. But no matter how you cut it, Highlands was over matched when they faced the Rocks. Now as far Scott co., While I applause their effort vs Trinity last year they too were outmatched by Trinity. Scotty co only scored 1 offensive TD & the other TD coming from a 60 yard interception returned for a TD. Scotty had serious problems moving the ball on T's defense. Again not taking anything away from them but Scott co benefitted from 3 things. Dawkins playing with a stomach virus puking thru out the game & clearly not 100%, Probably shouldn't have played. 2ndly, Travis Wright having an off night. He over & under threw several wrs. Some of those over thrown passes would have been TD's on most nights. Had nothing to do with Scott co's D Travis just over thru his wrs. & lastly, James Quick out with an injury. Dawkins managed to over come & fight thru being ill, going on to still rush for over 100 yards & Scored the game winning td 50 sec. left on a 67 yard screen & Travis Wright played a fine 4th quarter as he completed some big time passes.

The point I'm making is with a sick free Dawkins & Quick on the field, the score would have been lopsided, no disrepect to Scotty co. but everyone knows Trinity had the far better team.

Want to make it clear--not ALL public schools are opposed to playing them. We called them last year to try and play for next 2 yrs, but their schedule was full for the weeks we had open (it was before the Cincy schools dropped them).

 

Also, to Hoops Lady's point: we are NOT 'Open Enrollment' and have played them closer than any other public school (like Scott Co, we lost to them by 7 a few seasons ago). I'd love to be able to take kids from anywhere in Jefferson Co., but still think despite that we should still be able to compete & beat the 2 power private schools (lost to X by 1pt the year after we came close to T).

 

Male (who DOES have no enrollment district, BTW) beat both T and X last year at the Frosh level and we have beaten X at the frosh & JV levels in recent years.

 

So it IS possible. ...and the constant planting of the seed in public school kids' minds that it's not possible is part of the problem--in my opinion. It is deliberate on our staff's part to work weekly in the off-season to dispel this paradigm.

I think CoachJ makes a good point. Often time teams do show up against Trinity and you can tell by their body language they feel like they have lost even before the coin toss. If coaches can get their players over that psychological hump, that would make the games much more competitive.

Coachj does make a very good point. At my HS your introduction to HS football was you played T twice and X twice as freshman. That was big for us. Most years we would split with them. It pretty much set the tone that we felt like we could play anyone in the state.
