June 7, 201313 yr As I'm sure I mentioned in your previous threads the one part you left out about increasing oil supply growing is that it's growing not with the traditional cheap crude but, rather, with supply that is MUCH more costly to extract and refine. THAT is one of the reasons we'll never see cheap gas again. You can't leave that out of your argument. Your right and I don't think anyone in this thread is saying gas should be $1.00/gal. We are simply saying the game should be fair. Again look at this weeks increase. Two days ago the price was $3.66 in Henderson. The next morning it's $3.95, today it's $3.92. In the last 3 days what exactly changed? It wasn't taxes, it wasn't transportation, it wasn't competition. Oil prices haven't changed that much, as a matter of fact they were up yesterday and today yet the gas price has gone down. That's where the frustration comes in.
June 7, 201313 yr From 1975 to 2000, the EPA received only one (1) request to build a new refinery. The big five have absolutely no interest in increasing refining capacity. It's not the government, it's the ever-growing oligopoly in the oil and gas industry. The market needs competition to benefit consumers and as of right now, we're not getting it. Agreed on competition.
June 7, 201313 yr Agreed on competition. Given how much of our electricity comes straight from Kentucky-dug coal, I don't understand why Kentucky (especially the city governments of Louisville and Lexington) hasn't tried to get out in front of the electric car more. I've been planning the ad campaign in my head for years. Eventually Tesla Motors or another manufacturer will figure out how to make a reliable one for around $30,000 or less; it's only a matter of time.

Just like anything else newer cheaper technology always comes on board. Flat screens are 300 bucks now. Even with the massive surplus of oil now just 3-5 years after peak, they will never let the value drop below 50 bucks.
June 13, 201313 yr This is where my travels took me yesterday. These are the gas prices I saw in those areas. One part of Lexington $3.49 Another part of Lex $3.59 Versailles at the BG $3.69 Lawrenceburg $3.32

Here's a brief article on the costs associated with the Alberta oil sands. Just How Expensive Is Canadian Oil Sands Drilling? (SU, TOT, TRP)
June 13, 201313 yr at the Valero? where they didnt have gas last weekend. I don't know about that - the day I went through Mayslick there were plenty of folks at the pump. Gas is $3.43 all over Maysville, so it's not cost-effective for me to drive 20 miles round-trip to save 7 cents on the gallon.
June 13, 201313 yr ^ And I look for it to jump the typical 20 or 30 cents fairly soon. Certainly before July 4th.
June 14, 201313 yr Consider me a little irritated. I just drove the AA from Alexandria, KY to Grayson, KY. Alexandria - $3.81 this morning, now $3.77 Maysville (about 40 miles away) - $3.42 Vanceburg (about 70 miles away) - $3.59 Grayson (about 100 miles away) - 3.24 I think we are getting gouged. The same nearly holds true if you head north. Why is the price of gas so much just in the Cincinnati area? Is there really that much more demand in the Cincy/NKY area than there is say 30 miles away? 40 miles? 60? I don't get it!

June 15, 201313 yr I lived in Pineville for a while back in 2006 and one thing I noticed was that gas prices in Bell and Knox counties are about 15 to 20 cents cheaper per gallon than most other places. I asked one of the locals why gas was cheaper there and he said it had toto do with them being located close to the distribution center in Knoxville, but he wasn't totally sure that was the reason. I haven't been in that area in a while but I'd guess that gas down there is around $3.25 right now. Its about 3.50 to 3.60 everywhere else.
